Royce Gracie: Let's Face it...

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it...
One of the coolest things about old school UFC was it was bare hands.

No padding on your knuckles so you could punch someone into pugilistic dementia.

You fought like a real fight. No one calls time before a fight and goes and gets their hands wrapped up so they can punch someone repeatedly in the head without hurting their hands too much.

That's not a real fight.

come for the calo, stay for the yoshida brotha

IRS goes after Royce Gracie claiming tax underpayment, fraud totaling $1.15 million

Royce Gracie isn’t scheduled to fight at Bellator 149 until February, but he’s in a serious fight with the IRS over his taxes, including whether he rightfully claimed a tax credit for the poor.

UFC finally released the full Royce vs Ken fight.

Possibly the biggest stalemate in MMA history.

I agree. He just gave Royce his neck and didn't try to turn out. It's not like they didn't have RNC's in Pancrase.

The second fight shows how easily the Closed Guard can be nullified.

Royce Gracie showed the reality of one on one fight- that if brought to the ground- an individual with ground understanding will defeat/dominate/submit a stronger oppenant.

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it...
The moral I drew from that Ken / Royce fight was that the Closed Guard only works when there is a huge skill differential. It's all too easy to pin the hips to smother and stifle attacks.

There are probably a few people on EY.com that are more naturally athletic than Royce. The fact that he managed to get locked in a cage with people like Dan Severn, Kimo and Ken in his prime and not get himself killed , and even win proves how effective those techniques are. Even if bjj was figured out only 18 months after the first UFC, a 35 minute stalemate against a steroid freak like Ken is still impressive.

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it...
BJJ is definitely effective 1 on 1

what also helped was the whole "GRACIE AURA" back then.. the undefeated for 65 years garbage they promoted

it scared their opponents and once it hit the ground their opponents just curled up and panicked

now that we have seen the MYTH broken somehwat, people are not as scared to go on the ground and are more relaxed

I bet even the avg. joe has learned how to defend BJJ at some basic level just through osmosis

True. I've seen videos on wshh/liveleak where people that clearly don't know how to fight will still do some techniques right like using hooks without crossing legs in back mount. I've trained bjj but I never fully believed you could get ankle locked until I saw this:

UFC just had an event yesterday, but did it start at high noon, or what was going on there?

Not that I was particularly interested in the fights...

Gordeau, Pat Smith, Remco and Hackney were all formidable opponents for their time as well.

I'm just trying to figure this shit out like you are.

That threw me off too. I was getting ready to put the prelims on only to find that the event was already over.

From the everyman standpoint that Royce was supposed to represent, those are super scary guys to fight against.
