At least the Corporate UFC model means good fights are rewarded.

People complain that top UFC stars don't make enough. I think these days UFC pay is fine. I think the problem is more that one org is now a monopoly and has too much leverage in contract negotiations.

I'm also skeptical of the claim that boxing has a deeper talent pool. How many people in modern America train Boxing over MMA, Wrestling, BJJ, Judo Kickboxing? Its a different landscape, but I just don't buy the Boxing Elitism.

More people train MMA today than boxing.

MMA probably has a deeper talent pool but boxing will always theoretically be cooler because it's more pure.

UFC MMA is like gumbo fighting.. there is no real form.. with boxing due to the limitations it can be very beautiful. same with top level kickboxing

RE: Mayweather - Pacquiao Discussion thread
You should buy the boxing elitism cause boxing does indeed have a far deeper talent pool and an actual sport structure. Only other combat sport that can compare is Thai boxing (in Thailand)

It's not about how many people train x, y, z, it's about how many people compete and how often they compete.

Boxers from different promotions, with different titles, from different tv networks even, fight each other if they choose to. Pac-Mayweather was a Showtime-HBO co promotion for example.

Ufc pay is a scam for both the stars and non stars, considering what zuffa corp actually rakes in from these fighters, but that's not what bothers me.

The problem with the ufc is that it sucks. In every possible way. In every category. It's unwatchable even when sped up, and with the sound replaced by Benny Hill music.

Worse still is that it's brand of mma spread and poisoned every corner of the world, and only occasionally can you get something nice here or there.

Only Pride could make mma into something high. Pride was like a mini Olympic event with Street Fighter characters.

Early ufc was also good in a Bloodsport kind of way.

RE: Mayweather - Pacquiao Discussion thread
you might be right since in MMA is so "open" it can accommodate a wide range of skill sets. with boxing it's more focused on just one skillset the hands. worldwide the talent pool is probably deeper.. but within the US I think the MMA talent pool is deeper.

I don't think even in the US the talent pool is deeper. Mma and bjj training is expensive. Boxing training is not. The boxing scene is very lively in the US.

Mma is grey and shapeless, but it's not cause it's more open. Pride had more form than the ufc even though it had less restrictions.

what I mean is it can accommodate more diff. types of skillsets, body types etc.
when you increase the variables by that much there is more wiggle room.

Pride's ruleset, judging and treatment of fighters was superior so they nurtured a great combat fighting organization.

they rewarded aggression, rewarded finishing stronger, 10 min. first round ensures that fighters fight fresh for longer.

10 minute first also eliminates that idea that R1 is the 'feeling out' round, where you jab and establish distance, or test if you can finish your takedown.

10 min Rd encourages finishes.

I would have liked if Pride were 2 x 10min. So many fights really got going in the last couple minutes.
