I remember for years they were promoting the idea of suitcase nukes and that terrorists had them.
wouldn't suitcase nukes be an example of a "mini nuke" that could demonstrate an atomic weapon on a micro scale?

Suitcase nuke is a bit of a misnomer. These things did exist, but they weren't carried in suitcases. The man-portable way of carrying them was more like a backpack. Remember when I said:

"Using every trick in the book, how small can a weapons designer get a nuclear weapon to be and still have it work? The answer is about as small as a w54 tactical nuclear warhead."

Well, the w54 was the warhead was used in the Davy Crocket recoilless gun someone else mentioned. The w54 was also used in what I like to call the backpack nuke. It was was officially known as the "Special Atomic Demolition Munition"

One of the problems with this device was that if person in charge of the weapon set it off in combat, they were going to be a little too close for comfort when the bomb went off. The people who were trained on the weapon tended to think that using it in combat as basically a suicide mission.

interesting. it seems very high tech esp. for the time
but i did not see an explosion

I'm basically saying yeah maybe something like this but even smaller.. just show a demo that doesn't do that damage.. but I guess you explained to me why it's not so downward scalable

The greatest generation are underrated in their ability to create brilliant technology. The sound barrier was broken in 1947, and in 1966 the SR-71 was operational. The SR-71 was designed using slide rules, beam compasses, giant pieces of paper, and hand built models that were put in a wind tunnel. It's a much better performing airframe than the F-35, and is safer than the 787, which is a worse design than the 707 from the 1950s.

Above ground nuclear tests happened a lot in the eighteen years before the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty was signed in 1963. The reason that the tests were stopped is because they were dirty. They were causing millions of cancers, and weren't really answering new questions.

The smaller devices tend to be dirtier, producing more radiation per kiloton of yield. The w54 was eventually phased out of service. Not because it was dirty or ineffective, but because it was considered destabilizing. The Soviets really didn't like the idea of field commanders in Europe having small nukes that they could potentially detonate without launch codes from Washington.

I don't think it was an unreasonable concern, and when both sides negotiated, getting rid of the backpack nukes was one of the concessions.

By the way, neither the United States nor the Soviet Union ever gave a flying fuck what was credible to a socially isolated weirdo living in his parents basement in Topeka Kansas, eating hot pockets for three meals a day and not showering, touching himself to drawings of cartoon nudity, and worrying about the government putting microchips into him so that they can hear what he says, when there's not a woman on the planet who wants to hear anything he says. No, the U.S. and the Soviet Union only cared about what was credible to the other big boys who had nukes.

Seriously. In December of 1962 there was absolutely no public outcry anywhere in the world to have more above ground nuclear testing. On the contrary, there was a global public outcry to end above ground nuclear testing. And rightfully so.

So they don't work any more? Are they gonna blame it on ET, and claim they've been deactivated by visitors?
