Oh Science. Now high SALT intake is good for you.
Quote:By Heather Callaghan

The dietary tides are once again turning for salt.

You may remember a landmark JAMA study in 2011 that showed that contrary to what the medical community espoused for years - salt actually lengthens your life; it doesn't cut your life or raise the risk of hypertension. That study found that people actually lived longer if they consumed salt. Notably, they were not studying pink Himalayan salt, but regular old, processed table salt.

Additionally, a Cochrane study confirmed that salt did not cause heart or blood pressure problems and that reducing the substance offered no reduction of heart risks.

Some people are consuming salt in their water to help with adrenal function and hydrate better in the summer heat.

Now researchers, in a study published by Cell Press March 3rd in Cell Metabolism reveals that dietary salt could have a biological advantage: defending the body against invading microbes.

Study author Jonathan Jantsch, a microbiologist at Universitätsklinikum Regensburg and Universität Regensburg said:
Up to now, salt has been regarded as a detrimental dietary factor; it is clearly known to be detrimental for cardiovascular diseases, and recent studies have implicated a role in worsening autoimmune diseases.

Our current study challenges this one-sided view and suggests that increasing salt accumulation at the site of infections might be an ancient strategy to ward off infections, long before antibiotics were invented.
A press release goes on to say:
A high-salt diet increased sodium accumulation in the skin of mice, thereby boosting their immune response to a skin-infecting parasite. The findings suggest that dietary salt could have therapeutic potential to promote host defense against microbial infections.
Senior study author Jens Titze adds:
Despite the overwhelming evidence linking dietary salt to disease in humans, the potential evolutionary advantage of storing so much salt in the body has not been clear.
They first curiously teamed up to study this idea when they noticed that some wounded cage mice had unusually high amounts of salt accumulated at the infected wound sites.

They found that infected areas in patients with bacterial skin infections also showed remarkably high salt accumulation. Moreover, experiments in mice showed that a high-salt diet boosted the activity of immune cells called macrophages, thereby promoting the healing of feet that were infected with a protozoan parasite called Leishmania major.

This writer has to laugh upon realizing that the aim for future similar studies is to create drugs that modify salt metabolism to protect against disease. Yet, the whole idea behind demonizing salt all those decades was to offer salvation blood pressure drugs.

As always, they must offer a caveat, as one does not flippantly violate one of the biggest medically dogmatic tenants of the last century.

RE: Oh Science. Now high SALT intake is good for you.
this is probably true. The most healthy country in the world Japan has an incredibly HIGH sodium intake.

Traditionally people have eaten high sodium diets.

Now studies are saying it's good for you. This is why most people don't trust nutritional studies these days.

We have a wealth of knowledge.. it's called history and human experience. Our ancestors observed people who ate certain things with certain conditions.

yep. engineering science is legit because you can see immediate and predictable results. A phone works. A bridge works. People have been engaging in this type of science since man discovered fire.

Theoretical science or nutritional science is full of crap. and psychology is the grand-daddy of all bullshit science.

there are actually no real clinical diagnoses for ANY mental illnesses lol.

I hope the scientists do some research and find this dessert to be healthy, because I plan on trying one if they have them at Citi field this summer.

The D-backs will be serving a Churro Dog, yes, a Churro Dog at Chase Field this season

Hot dogs have been a ballpark staple since the beginning of baseball time. But what happens when you're done with your hot dog? Do you eat more hot dogs?

No, you are not Joey Chestnut.

Thankfully, Chase Field has created a dessert-style hot dog. It's called a Churro Dog and, well, feast your eyes below:

According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, the drool-inducing breakdown is as follows:
Quote:a warm cinnamon churro sitting inside a Long John chocolate-glazed donut, which is then topped with frozen yogurt, caramel and chocolate sauces.

Bye. See you in Arizona.

In all honesty salt is really neither good, nor bad for you imo. Sodium is one of dozens of essential nutrients. Keeping it in balance with these nutrients, especially potassium, is vital. Of course natural sources of sodium will be more beneficial then "table salt".

What I think is going on here is the endless banter of nutritional contradictory advice that makes people just want to give the fuck up.

I agree, and I blame Magazines, Lifestyle Websites, and Talk Shows.

I think the people that really need to be educated on nutrition are very rare. For the average person, it's self explanatory that they should avoid greasy foods, eat vegetables, eat fruit, eat some fish, keep a variety, don't eat anything deep-fried, avoid sugar, not too much dairy, don't overeat, don't eat too fast, space your meals out, drink lots of water and take it easy on the alcohol.

But then come along people with Nutrition Degrees, and salespeople who write articles. To get things published they have to make BOLD headlines.

THIS JUST IN: EGGS AREN'T GOOD FOR YOU.

Then on Women's talk-shows they invite guests who confuse the shit out the general public by talking about good cholesterol vs bad cholesterol, but make sure they throw in some buzzwords like Natural Healing, Body Intelligence, and Probiotics to give people something to walk away with.

I recently read something about how junk science from the 50's is the basis of today's nutritional science.
Most of based one University of Minnesota researchers flawed work.
It all started because Eisenhower had a heart attack...so it was determined that fat, red meat, salt all sorts of shit are bad for you and cause heart attacks.
The one factor that wasn't taken into consideration was smoking. Every one smoked until the 90's!

def. lots of BS about smoking.

Smoking may have tons of other health benefits but also obvious drawbacks. It also is known to increase concentration and productivity.

it's hard for them to prove anything scientifically about nutrition or health.. that is because it's hard to isolate single variables. a guy who smokes isn't only smoking, he may be doing other stuff like coke, drugs, drinking soda, not exercising etc.. and how are you going to isolate that? it's very hard.

People need to think on a basic level and cut through the scientific jargon. what they do is NOT very complicated. it's just masked with complicated jargon and mathematics.

Sea salt is actually perfectly balanced from a yin yang standpoint. Iodine is a thyroid stimulant while sodium chloride retains fluid which is cooling in nature. The thing is that most people are yin depleted in the states due to high stress / high work hours lifestyle and chronic masturbation. So table salt is more recommended at this time.
