Super-clear ice allows a man to seemingly float in mid-air.

Last Saturday, Andre Poineau had a feeling there would be a good, hard freeze at his cottage along the shores of Lake Charlevoix near Boyne City, Michigan. But when he went down to the house to have a look the morning after a zero-degree night, he found the lake’s surface perfectly frozen, and eerily clear.

So clear, in fact, that he took a shovel with him to probe the ice as he went, since it lacked bubbles, sediment, cracks or any other clues to indicate where it might be thinner from one place to the next. He chopped a hole in the ice to see how thick it was: about 2 inches. So unnerved was he by walking out onto it that he didn’t dare go in past the point where he knew that if he fell in, the water would only reach his armpits.

“Plus, if I did go through, the shovel would give me a wide surface to be able to pull myself up on,” Poineau chuckles. (See the bull moose frozen in mortal combat.)

Journalists and Dissent Under Attack In The United States

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is concerned to learn that multiple journalists are being charged with participating in a riot and face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for covering inauguration protests Friday. RSF calls on the Washington DC authorities to drop all felony riot charges against journalists who were merely doing their job to report the news.

Children Held by Iraqi Kurdish Forces Claim Torture

Over 180 Kids Held Without Charges at Unknown Locations

http://news.antiwar.com/2017/01/29/child...m-torture/

A new report from Human Rights Watch reports that a number of children being held as uncharged detainees by the Iraqi Kurdish government are reporting that they are suffering regular torture at the hands of the regional government’s security forces.

The children were initially detained “on suspicion” that they have ISIS connections, but none of them have enough evidence against them to actually be charged with any crime. Their families report the KRG government won’t tell them where their children are being held, or for how long.

Human Rights Watch warned that the use of torture and “enforced disappearances” by Kurdish forces risked driving the families of the detained into joining extremist groups themselves, saying the officials need to “look beyond the military solution” and end policies that are fueling such unrest.

Though Kurdish officials have denied all such incidents, the KRG has repeatedly been faulted during the ISIS war for its mistreatment of Arab civilians, particularly in towns along the frontier with Kurdish territory, expelling many, and destroying large numbers of homes, which many see as an attempt to change the demographics of certain oil-rich parts of northern Iraq that the Kurds intend to annex into their territory after the war.

EXCLUSIVE — MMA Fighter Jake Shields on How He Saved a Man in Berkeley From Antifa Rioters

Quote:“The show got cancelled so I was kind of checking things out,” said Shields in an interview with Breitbart Tech. “Obviously it was a rough crowd, so I didn’t want to walk in the middle of it, and all of a sudden I see this guy running out completely covered in blood and these guys were chasing him with sticks, trying to circle him.”

“Mobs of people. Nobody helped, but people were yelling ‘get up, get up.’ Like fifteen people were trying to attack him and others were cheering them on,” he continued. “No one helped, no one had the balls to step in, so my reaction was to run in and start picking people off.”

Her arms stuck in a clothing donation bin, she hung through the cold night and died

Travis M. Andrews, The Washington Post

Published 3:41 pm, Wednesday, February 8, 2017

Judith Permar drove to a clothing drop-off box at about 2 a.m. Sunday, her black Hummer shrouded in the darkness of the Natalie, Pennsylvania, night.

It doesn't appear the 56-year-old was fueled by a late-night desire to help the poor, though. When she arrived at the box, she jumped out of her SUV, leaving the engine running.

At that point, it seems that she pulled a stepladder up to the drop-off box. No one can say for sure - the next time anyone saw Permar, she was dead.

According to police, she stood on the stepladder so she could reach the top of the box. She rummaged through the donated items, even taking some out. Police can't be sure exactly why - given her choice of car, it wouldn't seem that she needed to taking clothing from a charity box - but it doesn't appear this was the first time.

Mount Carmel Township police Chief Brian Hollenbush told the Philadelphia Inquirer police had received a report of a woman, also driving a black Hummer, removing items from the bin back in November.

After allegedly removing several bags filled with clothes and shoes, she slipped as the stepladder collapsed, her arm catching in the door.

"She was fishing bags out and the ladder she was standing on gave way and she couldn't get her hand loose," Hollenbush told the Associated Press.

The fall broke her arms and wrists, which were trapped in the box. Her feet, meanwhile, didn't quite touch the ground, leaving her hanging.

There she dangled until 8:30 the next morning, when she was finally found. Bags were scattered around her, and the Hummer's engine was still running.

The temperature had dropped to 21 degrees that night, according to Weather Underground.

Permar was pronounced dead at the scene. The county coroner James F. Kelley listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma and hypothermia..............
