RE: Bj Penn's legacy
the bottom line is that Gomi had 2 successful runs as #1 LW in the world.

the first with shooto that was about 10 fights.

the 2nd with Pride which was the greatest LW run in the history of the sport.

BJ Penn has shown moments of brilliance but overall his career has not been that impressive.

he is also given many more opportunities to avenge losses and to get rematches and he still loses.

To me he is a semi-legendary fighter like Yuki Kondo or Tamura.

He will be forgotten by mainstream MMA in a few years like most pioneers.

once could argue that being born w/the silver spoon would have made it much easier to win couple BJJ world championships, compete a little bit, open a gym & live off the name. guys w/no heart, or will, don’t ask to fight the most relevant fighters @ their particular time regardless of weight diff, promotion, styles, matchups, etc.

hughes, pulver, machida, GSP, sherk, fitch, edgar & diaz (to name a few, lol) were all relevant fighters & @ the top of their game when he fought them. Hughes & GSP (in particular) were simply smashing dudes @ the time & were out of his natural weight class – not to mention bad stylistic matchups.

problem staying motivated? sure, can't argue w/that. never a fan of cardio training? no doubt.

no heart? not a chance. he has been in some wars vs some of the best.

much more relevant than gomi, even @ this very moment IMO.

He was very confident in his skills but when things werent going his way he would fold easily and quit. Thats the very definition of having no heart. Wasted talent.

RE: Bj Penn's legacy
^ agreed.

once he faced real adversity he just shut down and quit. you saw it in many fights.

if he's a legend then I guess Frankie Edgar is a uber legend for beating him 3x?
