Subscribers are the best music customers we have. 120 dollars a year is substantially more than the average user spends on purchasing tracks,” added Zahavah Levine, Google’s director of global music partnerships for Android.

This was part of the reason your hero Kim dot com was arrested & his company disbanded because he was in the process of doing something similar but there was to be a far higher % of revenue going to the artist, that had to be stopped.
The higher the % of the market apple controls logically the lower % of revenue will go to the artist, if they want to be involved they have to pay the price.

^ I agree. Kim Dot Com was targeted due to the threat he posed with his MEGA MUSIC service.

Their case against him made no sense as it was SIMPLY a file upload service. illegal files were taken down just like with every other website.

this subscription stuff is garbage. I like having things permanently.

If I DL an MP3 , I have the MP3 forever to listen to.

If I get some streaming stuff all my music is gone if I stop subscribing.

Which is why I think they see the future in selling subscriptions.

More money in the long run.

I'm just trying to figure this shit out like you are.

yep. let's say it's 15 a month for streaming.

that's like paying for 15 songs a month. very few people do that these days.

so this is a way for them to make money but I think most artists will not get anything.

how much would they pay per listen for an artist? a penny? if that.

the money is all in live performance now which is a shame.

live can never capture the sonic quality of a final finished product.

You can still download mp3s for free, to keep file forever. While money is not in the recorded market, u can still see it as a main marketing tool, with consumers getting lots of free giveaways or downloads.

If performers just become more creative in live shows, with the live bonus of interactivity and forming genuine connection with audience, I'm cool with that. Plus social media basically erased all the fan-distance as opposed to the TV days, u can't just be a canned idol and sell 100k CDs for just being on the radio anymore.

U notice how artists pre-social media tend to rake in mostly from endorsements, while the advent of social media tend to enable artists to brand themselves and reap the profits of their own merchandises, because they now have direct info and access to their own paying audience?

In a way, artists can control their own destiny moreso than before. Artists who start out used to get fucked over by long-term bad "360" contracts with major labels. They couldn't get their pay day until the end of the first deal (could be 10yrs), and only if when it comes to the 2nd deal they're popular enough to be able to negotiate a favorable cut.

Music biz is not all bad even compared to back then imo.

RE: Strange. Apple to acquire Beats By Dre for 3.2 billion
Lol, so typical of moronic, cancerous hip hop culture. Dre's drunken boasting about becoming the world's "first hip hop billionaire" may cost him the fucking deal.

Has Dr. Dre’s drunken boast cost his company $3.2 billion?

http://news.yahoo.com/dr-dre-drunken-boa...48069.html

We haven’t heard anything official about its supposed $3.2 billion purchase of Beats from Apple yet and now Billboard reports there’s a good reason for that. According to Billboard’s sources, Apple was not at all happy about a video posted by actor Tyrese Gibson where a couple of weeks ago in which Beats founder and hip-hop legend Dr. Dre boasts about becoming “the first billionaire in hip-hop.” Apple was also probably not happy to hear that Gibson said that Dre was “drunk off of Heinekens” in the video, which was posted on Gibson’s Facebook page right after news broke that Apple would be buying Beats for $3.2 billion.

While most of us found the Dre video funny, it’s pretty obvious why Apple did not — the company has long thrived with a culture of extreme secrecy and it probably took the video as a sign that the team at Beats might not be a good fit. In addition to this, Billboard says that Apple was not happy that Beats apparently leaked news about the deal well before the company was ready to make it formal.

This doesn’t mean the deal to acquire Beats is dead, of course, but it seems that Apple is rethinking the terms of an acceptable deal and doing its due diligence to make sure it’s not making a huge mistake.
