I also point out that genes are not the only determinant of height. How tall a person becomes depends not only on how much protein the person consumes, but also on how much sleep the person gets, and how much exercise the person does. The average height difference between Japanese and Americans is negligible until they are about 13. The gap becomes noticeable when they reach about 15. In Japan, kids must study very hard in their 9th grade (the last year of Middle School), often cutting sleep, to prepare for entrance exams for high schools (10 th grade), and once again in their 12th grade to prepare for entrance exams for colleges. I had to study 30 to 35 hours a week after school when I was in HS.

^that is great insight. The piturary produces HGH when you sleep, not getting enough sleep will impact growth.

The number of school days in US is 180 per year (2160 days in 12 yrs: finishing HS, and 2880 days: finishing BS or BA in 16 yrs), while in Japan it was more than 255 per year (3060 days in 12 yrs: finishing HS, which is more than the 2880 days in US: finishing BS or BA in 16 yrs) in the sense that most kids go to learning centers called juku or yobikoh during term breaks including summer vacations. Many kids go to school over 300 days (3600 days in 12 yrs: finishing HS) a year. When it comes to academic rigor, Japanese schools had the highest standard in the world until recently (now Singapore and Taiwan surpassed Japan). For instance, in most high schools in Japan, 2 years of Chemistry (equivalent to Freshman Chemistry sequence and Organic chemistry), 2 years of Physics (Lower division Physics sequence) or Biology, Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus I, II, III, some Linear Algebra, Discrete Math, Set Theory and Logic, some Number Theory, Calculus-based Probability and Statistics including Statistical Inference (this course is taught in graduate school in many universities in US) are required to get a diploma.

When they are exposed to such academic rigor, they cannot put in much time for sports or sleep. While most Japanese kids are sacrificing sleep, most US kids can play sports and sleep a lot. As a result, the average height of US kids gets much higher than that of Japanese kids. My cousin, who is 193 cm, went to a low ranking HS, and did not need to study much like a typical US kid. The percentage of Japanese HS kids who must go through such rigor is more than 100 times larger than that of US kids. The education systems in Korea and Taiwan were introduced by Japan. Similar facts hold in these countries. The average height of men in these countries are indeed much lower than that of US men, which is a result of the sacrifice they make to achieve academic excellence, and the fact that their average amount of protein consumption is less than 50 % of that of US kids.

LOL. this is actually very very insightful.

More sleep does increase height potential. If asian students can't sleep as much, they will not get taller. This also might explain why korean americans are taller than korean koreans.

We need people with this kind of insight on this board.

crazy the amount of hours that the Japanese kids spend in school, from a westerner's perspective.

I don't think I did, how do you unstick it?

I visited the website. First, the average height of all Japanese males is 170 cm in 2003, not 165 cm. Second, the charts on this website assume that all the statistical distributions are normal (bell-shaped) so that the standardized normal distribution model becomes valid in all the cases. In reality, no statistical distribution is perfectly normal. The size of the sample is only 1000 (there is no such thing as an absolutely random sample). The sample average of 1000 males is used by the author to estimate the average height of 60 million Japanese males based on the assumption that the Law of Large Number, or more precisely, The Central Limit Theorem, is correct. The Central Limit Theorem says that as the sample size approaches to the population size, the sample average converges to the population average. Even though the theorem is true, it does not give any information at all on the size of the gap between the sample average and the population average when the population average is unknown no matter how randomly the sample is selected. The man who made this website knows statistics only at the level of Introduction to Statistics (for non-math majors who have never learned calculus). In the eyes of a professional mathematician having a Ph. D in Math like me, this website is loaded with fallacies.

Ricky MMA what's your beef against East Asians in general? Whitewhale was talking about US wrestling and you just had to randomly note that the Korean and Japanese points were for the lower weight classes? Then you say that, lol, that East Asian culture is not homogenous which is absurd. Open up any history textbook and you will see that China is the basis of Eastern civilization. and for you to say that Chinese inventions were discoverd by "chance" is equally ludicrous. The chinese must have found out about tens of thousands of things by chance too, huh? even negative numbers! I guess Joseph Needham's 17 volume opus magnum Science and civilization is about the luckiest inventors in the world! I then said that japanese dominate judo. YOu said that wasn't true because it was only very recently that they started dominating HWs again. You then mentioned in the past 15 years and I basically said you're only as good as your last year. But why did you arbitraily choose 15 years? Cuz it fit your european superiority thesis? What's wrong with that? I will quote my man pdeking: "Since World Judo Championship and Olympic Judo started, there have been 58 titles in +93kg, +95kg, +100kg, -100kg, and Open weight classes. Japanese judoka captured 35 of the 58 gold medals. " Then you speak about how Japanese people despise other Asians, when in actuality they despise any foreigner. just like pdeking said, some of the most popular male actors in Japan right now are Korean. HK actors like Tony Leung and Leslie Cheung are extremely popular in Japan as well. The only reason they are despised is because they are poorer. A Hong Kongnese or Taiwanese would not get as much bs as a mainland chinese. Frankly speaking, the mainland chinese get no respect anywehre. They are loud, annoying and have little class. Not all, but a lot.

you then make up some bullshit about Japanese life expectancy, as pdeking pointed out, saying that the increases were "only for the women" Funny you didn't mention that Japanese men live the longest too. The oldest man ever recorded was japanese. Now, I'm not a japanese nuthugger. I'm just interested in the facts. The only reason why i may seem like japanese fighter nuthugger is because everybody on the UG believes that japaense fighters can only win "by work" or that they are "tomato cans" But the reality is that UFC has way more tomato cans than pride. The difference is that in UFC, they don't get invited back, but in Pride their is loyalty and gratitude for their employees. that's why you see people like Otsuka, Yamaoto etc. come back to fight. In addition, funny people don't mention that most of the cans are from the states and elsewhere now. Giant Silva, Predator, Sentoryu, Dan Bobish, Waterman, vader etc. These are the new crop of tomatos , but they don't get labeled tomato? Why because they are not japanese. That is the only reason why I get pissed when people bash japanese fighters. Because people single out the japanese and accuse them of nonsense and label them cans when in actuality there are cans in every country.

HAHAHAHA. This was before I started my powerpoint posting style.

I am sort of a pioneer with that.

Pride is heavily biased in favor of the Gracies and Brazilians in general. They always exaggerate their records, e.g, still announcing Rickson’s record as 400-0, and Ryan’s record as 500-0 in street fights. Pride creates a controversy to save Royce's face and Royler's face, giving them a chance to claim that they were not defeated. When a fight between a Brazilian and a non-Brazilian is close, they give the decision to the Brazilian.

In 1998, Rickson competed in Muscle Ranking, a Japanese TV show, against professional baseball players, soccer players, and others. Rickson’s score was at the dead bottom when the competition was over. His performance was by far the most pathetic of all the participants. This is another proof that Rickson is a bogus fighter who can beat someone only in a fake fight.

In Rickson’s fight footage, it looked like his opponents had been instructed to cooperate with Rickson. They did not even try to counter or defend against Rickson’s initial attack. They showed no sign of aggressiveness at all. All the guys who compete in Judo World Championship or Olympics move far better than Rickson. No wonder he was defeated by Ron Tripp in 51 seconds. Any Olympic level judoka will crush Rickson in 20 seconds.

Quote:“Hmm, having practiced both wrestling and Judo, IMO, wrestling is more physically demanding than Judo, as it requires more strength, balance and at least as much coordination; ergo MMA's Olympic medalist wrestlers are probably more athletically accomplished than MMA's Judo Olympic medalists. (Compare their respective physiques for further evidence, lol.)”

PDEKING: you will see that this is completely the opposite to the reality if you watch Ogawa (1992 Olympic Judo Silver Medalsit) vs Ghaffari(1992 Olympic Greco-Roman Wrestling Silver Medalsit), in which Ogawa easily destroyed Ghaffari. Both Ghaffari and Rulon Gardener (2000 Olympic Greco-Roman Wrestling Gold Medalsit) are ugly fat slobs. In judo, no such fat slobs have ever won any medal in any World Championship or Olympics. In wrestling, even fat slobs can get Olympic medals, but not in judo.
