Dan Herbertson Interview With Miro Mijatovic
Dan Herbertson did this interview with Miro Mijatovic, the former manager of Fedor and CroCop, about the events that led to the demise of Pride. It originally aired around a year ago on Spike tv's mma show and passed without much discussion in the mma community.

Here are links to the interview for anyone here that may not have seen it. It's a three-parter.

On a side note, Miro is managing my friend's band which consists of 2 Japanese girls and the producer from PM Dawn.

I managed to dig up an old interview that Eddie Goldman did with Tadashi Tanaka back in 2006. Tanaka is the Shukan Gendai journalist that originally broke the PRIDE-Yakuza scandal that eventually led to the death of PRIDE.

RE: Dan Herbertson Interview With Miro Mijatovic
this is what Crocop had to say about Miro Mijatovic:

Quote:-I met Mijatovic in the beginning of 2002 and I can’t remember who introduced us

-He started to offer his services cause he lived in Japan and spoke excellent Japanese but I refused his offer

-I have to acknowledge that he was very useful for us to order food at Japanese restaurants cause he spoke Japanese and that’s all he did

RE: Dan Herbertson Interview With Miro Mijatovic
Pride had the potential to be one of the biggest positive PR vehicles for Japan.

People like japanese robots, toys etc.

but this Pride thing transcended ALL boundaries... most of the guys that watched with me back then weren't even FIGHTING FANS.. but Pride could appeal to everyone.

RE: Dan Herbertson Interview With Miro Mijatovic
below is also a fun read, but after I don't think I believe Miro, sounds very far fetched.

Quote:Mirko had agreed his best ever purse of $150,000 US for the Sakuraba fight. This was a huge amount in those days. But when Mirko stepped into Yoyogi Stadium and saw 80,000 people, Mirko’s entourage started to get into his ear. At the stadium, as the event was unfolding, Mirko told K-1 that unless they doubled his money, he wouldn’t be walking out into the ring. You can imagine the shitfight this caused; and finally, Mirko was paid his $300,000; but with it, came Ishii’s banishment back into the wilderness. After the event, Ishii publicly pronounced that Mirko, due to his conduct at Shockwave, would be out of the K-1 Grand Prix that year and it was unclear that he would ever be coming back to K-1.

RE: Dan Herbertson Interview With Miro Mijatovic
Hmm, according to Tadashi Tanaka, 'Mr I' (the Korean Yakuza boss Ishizaka) was actually running the day to day PRIDE operations, including doing all the matchmaking and everything. Sakakibara was installed as the front man after they took out Morishita. What seems obvious to me given this information is that the Japanese Yakuza would have to be considered the premier mma promoters in the world since it was under the new Yakuza management in 2003 that PRIDE reached the high point of it's existence as a fight promotion with the yearly grand Prix tournaments, the New Years Eve megashows, the Bushido series, the improved matchmaking and the culling of the unskilled pro wrestlers from the PRIDE roster. The 2003-2006 period was the golden age for PRIDE and for mma and it seems like, according to Tanaka, Mijatovic, all the knowledgeable sources on the subject, Ishizaka and his gang of Yakuza were the ones that were responsible for bringing us all these great events, what has been to this day the high point of mma.

And to think that Fuji TV had to take PRIDE off the air despite the fact that twenty percent of the Japanese public was watching the shows because of what began as a squabble over Fedor and the 2003 New Years Eve shows network ratings battle. It a damned shame that it wound up ruing world class mma in Japan. I can't wait for the day that the heat is off and big time mma is greenlit for television in Japan again. I don't think it's a matter of if, but when this will happen.

^ great post. Not to mention it would've been a great PR tool for Japan as a whole. they could extend their cultural influence beyond anime or electronics.

RE: Dan Herbertson Interview With Miro Mijatovic
Japan can't just abandon an industry it's been the world leader in forever. It makes no sense. Top competitor UFC could never produce anything like the same quality of event and with their greed having compelled them to step on the product to the point where it's almost KOTC level now the door remains wide open for a resurgent big time Japanese mma scene today.

RE: Dan Herbertson Interview With Miro Mijatovic
exactly. perhaps japan's overlords felt this thing could cause a resurgence in "samurai nationalism"?

RE: Dan Herbertson Interview With Miro Mijatovic
Who really knows. The problem seems to be, based on what I have read, that the networks have been told not to deal with the 'old actors' in the Japanese fight scene ie, Yakuza. Problem is, they're the ones with all the expertise. So it seems, at least on the surface, to be sort of a catch 22 situation. But what's going on behind the scenes is really anyone's guess. I think what will eventually transpire is that a new formation of the old guard will re-emerge when the time is deemed right by the Japanese powers.

But you could be right. It could be something weird like that that's really holding things up.
