The Korean Zombie set to make $20k/$20k at UFC 163 for Title Shot
UFC 163 payouts: Korean Zombie discloses 20/20 salary split with no PPV points against Jose Aldo in Brazil

"The Korean Zombie" says he is popular, but doesn't make a lot of money. I can think of one way to change that next month in Brazil

Ultimate Fighting Championship(UFC) featherweight Chan Sung Jung will get a title shot when he fights reigning division kingpin Jose Aldo at the upcoming UFC 163 pay-per-view (PPV) event, which takes place at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Aug. 31, 2013.

And not much else.

"The Korean Zombie" has already disclosed his UFC 163 fight purse of $20,000 to show with $20,000 to win. Obviously, the financial benefits of beating "Junior" at his own game could be enormous and Jung also has the opportunity to snag a couple of "Fight Night" bonuses.

But he still doesn't make a lot of money, according to his recent conversation with Cor MMA:

"I will be making 20,000 dollars to show, and another 20,000 dollars if I win. I do not get any PPV points. After two more fights, I will be able to negotiate my contract. Hopefully, I will be in a good position when that happens. I believe I am a very popular fighter, but I do not make a lot of money. There is definitely a problem with that. MMA was at its peak in South Korea when Hong Man Choi fought Fedor Emelianenko. Hong Man Choi was a huge star in South Korea; there isn't anyone like that anymore. TV ratings were 10 percent in those days, now they are barely 1-2 percent. South Korea needs a star like that for MMA to flourish. I am lacking in a lot of ways, but hopefully I can become a star with the way I fight."

Jung (13-3) has the opportunity to follow Chris Weidman's lead and turn the mixed martial arts (MMA) world upside down with a stunning upset win next month in Brazil, over a talent many pundits consider to be one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport.

Aldo is not a better striker than his UFC 163 opponent (says Jung), but is still currently a -800 favorite.

As for his earnings, "The Korean Zombie" -- who hasn't competed since tapping Dustin Poirier at UFC on FUEL TV 3 well over a year ago -- may be entitled to a backstage "thank you bonus," since he stepped in for the injured Anthony Pettis on short notice.

Zombie last fought in May 2012. If he loses to Aldo, which he will, after camp and management expenses he'll be making about the same as a Walmart cashier makes for the year.

if he can fight 3x a year and make 20K each time.. that would be an OK salary I guess.

but the catch is if you lose a couple times you are out.. so it makes sense to negotiate high salaries each time.

UFC can afford to pay so much more.. but they won't.

I would not accept title shot for 20k. Ultimately, he accepted thay ridiculous offer.

UFC is the only promotion on the block now, they dictate the rules.

Japanese/asian MMA is dead at this point.

Very cool. Like shinya aoki vs Fedor exhibition.

TKZ has a big name in Korea. He should have strong armed zuffa into paying up but Dana never forgets. Very vengeful.

Well, that's about, oh, maybe 3 percent of what he should be receiving. Given the current monopoly, the only way around this is for the fighters to form a union and negotiate for full public pay disclosure. Zuffa will only pay fairly if it gets publicly embarrassing for them. Look at the history of sports unions-nothing moves the needle quite like making the athlete's pay public. This tactic always produces immediate results. Big results.

^yes 600k to show 600k to win would be fair. I can't think of any other job where the 2nd best in the world gets paid walmart level wage.

I think guys like the KZ (peace be upon his kimchee ass) make more from privates than they do through fight purses and sponsorship.

Stun Gun is the more talented of the two in my opinion but I hardly watch MMA anymore because its mainstream.

Try watching Kykushin Karate instead.

Now that Glory World Series kickboxing is running events in NYC (eat your hearts out Lorenzo and Dana) and since Zuffa has removed the grappling from the UFC product, with any luck Glory steals the lion's share of the UFC audience with the best standup fighters on the planet and UFC reverts to it's hardcore/niche roots under new owners after the Fertitta's cash out.

How about that scenario eh fellas?
