You could see an unknown object in the sky and still be able to make some judgment of distance, depending on how much of the object you can see.

Suppose that you see what could be a circular drone or a giant disc flying a half mile overhead but you can't tell which.
Judging distance can be hard, so maybe you won't know that it's a half mile vs. a mile. But you can still tell the difference as to whether the object is 10 feet over your head or at the distance of Mars, or perhaps a quarter mile vs. airplane level.

I do agree that it can be hard to judge distance measurements by sight, especially if you aren't experienced, like spotting two planes with one thousands of feet above the other. I don't even know offhand what height they fly at.

It doesn't take very much height before a jumbo jet becomes a dot way before it reaches maximum height, so if you're seeing something many time larger regardless of knowing exactly what it's height is, you can guess it's pretty large because the closer things get, even at night, you can gauge much more easily as it gets closer.

I wonder if what I saw in 1997-ish was the debris that resulted from this space collision that ignited and crashed against the earth. The date checks. The collision at 20.000mph could explain the erratic movements that we saw in the sky.

How fast do satellites fly?

If you saw two starlike objects travel kind of slowly (in speed appearancedue to the distance) and then one of them emitted a shard or shards that fell directly to earth, I guess it could be that.

If you saw stars making zigzag patterns of flight, then it probably was not that.

What about a loop pattern?

Same thing.
Meteors and broken satellites fall in a straight line.

They don't zigzag quickly up and down or go in loops.

if you look at the space collision video that I posted earlier, the cargo vessel crash caused Mir to spin indefinitely and they had to use the onboard engines to stabilize it. I think it is definitely possible that a smaller object such as the vessel was on a loop trajectory after the crash as it reentered the atmosphere falling down.

Very astute observations

I am having trouble finding the spot in the video where they show the vessel spinning. A vessel spinning is not the same as a loop trajectory, and I think you are saying that it's possible that a spinning vessel was on a loop trajectory.

Certainly I would need to look at the spinning video and then compare it to what you saw. I am guessing if there was a loop trajectory for Mir, then the loop trajectory would be shown in the movie, and then you wouldn't be just saying that the loop trajectory was possible, but rather you would be saying that the same loop trajectory was shown in the movie.

Certainly if one object hit another in space, it would make the second object spin on its own axis. However, I am skeptical that it would make a loop trajectory around an axis of nothing like the edges of a toy spinning top around the center of the top. I guess an object knocked in space could spin directly down to earth, but did the Mir station spin to earth, and did you see the object you saw fall onto the earth?

It sounds like they are saying that the Mir station had stabilizers, because you wrote, "they had to use the onboard engines to stabilize it."

It would be helpful if you knew what month at least you saw the object and where over the earth the Mir accident occurred.

No it was the Mir space station that was spinning. The vessel I'm assuming, could've been sent on a loop trajectory after the collision since it's the smaller object. There's no footage of the impact.

RE: Did you or someone you trust ever see a UFO?
When you said that you looked up and you saw the object spinning, did you mean that you saw the object on the same day in history as the Mir satellite, or did you mean that it was about that year (1997)?
