RE: Japan in the '80s - HD
i started traveling to Japan in the late 90s
it was great at the time.
But I could tell maybe the late 80s and early to mid 90s were the pinnacle.
started getting loose in the mid 2000s

total capitulation by fukushima 2011 earthquake.
I think now they are a shell of their former shelf.

Very FOODIE based culture now.
Their national soul has weakened to a TREMENDOUS degree.
which is sad.

In about half year leading up to Fukushima, Japan seem to be going into the direction of returning to their imperialist militant aggressive ways. I saw a photo of them sending a fleet that was threatening to retake the island of Sakhalin from eastern Russia. After Fukushima, I didn't hear anything more about Japan trying to take back Sakhalin.

RE: Japan in the '80s - HD
yeah they were getting high on themselves for a bit.
A lot of that stuff is just USA prodding Japan to provoke CHina/Korea
it's useful to keep the masses distracted and the asian bloc at each other's throats

RE: Japan in the '80s - HD
Well, look, you can theorize that Japan being aggressive to Russia was the US provoking them, but there are several other factors to consider besides just US control over Japan:
1. You said that they were getting high on themselves. I kind of remember them also asserting some kind of self power or something against the US as well at that time. It may have been economic too.
2. They may have been empowering and growing an independent military force at the time. I was surprised to hear that their fleet could assert anything aggressively even about 50 years after WWII.
3. Japan never gave up its claim to Sakhalin after WWII or apparently its desire to retake it.
4. If you theorize that Fukushima was from something like DARPA, then clearly the US was not happy about Japan's direction at the time Japan was threatening Sakhalin militarily.
5. When Fukushima happened, US generations like Vets and MIA/KIA soldiers' kids still had soreness over Japan in WWII. The idea of Japan invading China or Russia etc. is not really a totally happy one for Americans.

That's my impression as well based on their entertainment at the time. Things continued to be good up until 2003 - 2004 and then a drop off.

Sinse we are posting videos from the period, here is a Sony HDVS videodisc demo from 1990 (analog hd storage shot on analog hd cameras)

.
I spent 13 months in Okinawa Japan in 1980-81. I lived right outside of Naha, Japan. It was amazing. Japanese culture was awesome.

One cultural difference I found interesting was how Japanese people wouldn't look at you on a city bus. They considered it disrespectful and an invasion of your privacy.

yeah it kind of coincided in a way with the demise of pride too.
yeah 2003-04 was def. a big drop off in overall quality.. esp. in terms of electronics

VAIOs were very unreliable around this period.
