the Japanese were very innovative in adapting sport wrestling to fight-sport. It was more than just take-down and control by laying/smothering from top position which is very boring and not well suited for fight-sport as entertainment. Japanese wresting for fight-sport evolved into a dynamic system of movement. Frank Shamrock also seems to show influence from this method in his exciting expression of submission grappling which was different from the pull-guard and "relax" take-punches/punishment until the opponent tires of the early Brazilian method.

of course Catch-Wrestling/Judo made a significant contribution to the Japanese expression of sport-fight grappling method.
