Can't believe the Houston Rockets owner hasn't fired that general manager yet. What a dumbass.

What kind of precedent would the Rockets set by firing him for something he said like that? Local fans would then turn on the Rockets here in the states. You can't let a communist dictatorship control the exercise of your own citizens free speech rights. The communists are already censoring their own citizens. Are we going to let them censor Americans now also?

i dunno, he's a basketball gm, not a college student. You'd think he would consider the impact his words might have on his company and his industry. Now we have the sound of billions going down the tube because he wanted to express his political opinion.

He's entitled to his opinion, it's a free country, as you say. But he isn't entitled to his seven figure salary, that he'll likely be shedding in the coming days and justifiably so. He just damaged his team, and his industry immeasurably. Part of being a seven figure earning manager is being a big boy in long pants and thinking before blurting out opinions that are likely to do massive financial damage to your franchise and industry.

If China is such a foul place, then maybe the NBA should take your lead and wash their hands of it.

The NBA has to choose between its $4-billion China business and its values

https://qz.com/1723780/nba-has-to-choose...ts-values/

China Feud Over Morey’s Hong Kong Tweet Threatens Rapid Growth Of NBA Team Values

[i]Saturday marked two years since Tilman Fertitta was approved as the owner of the Rockets. The $2.2 billion price tag was a record for a U.S. sports franchise and marked a three-decade-plus ownership journey for Fertitta, who first tried to buy the team in the early 1980s.

Fertitta paid a rich eight times revenue for the team, but the price looked like a bargain in August when Alibaba cofounder Joe Tsai agreed to pay $3.3 billion for the Nets and Barclays Center; that record price was more than ten times revenue. Compare that with the NFL, where a team is on average worth 6.3 times revenue, or with Major League Baseball, where the average is 5.4 times.

NBA franchise values have escalated in recent years in large part because of the league’s international opportunities, which are dramatically better than those for the NFL or MLB. And China, the world’s second-largest economy, is a central character in the NBA’s growth model. Any threat to the league’s globalization could imperil that growth.

The NBA’s clash in China is not going to cause a collapse of the value of NBA franchises. Teams still generate at least 90% of their revenue within North America. Still, ahead of a preseason game in Japan on Tuesday, Silver said, “There is no doubt—the economic impact is already clear.” The only question is how big that impact might be."

And this is the Houston rockets we're talking about, of all teams. Yao Ming's old team, the big team in China. Can you imagine what this is going to cost Fertitta? This would be like an oil executive in Alberta coming out now during the Canadian election as a hard core climate activist tweeting, 'we have to support Elizabeth May and the Green party.'Only the Green's can reduce our carbon footprint by 50 percent, stop the pipeline to the coast from being built, and may a real commitment to green energy.'

.
China is horrible and have just shown the world who they really are. If the NBA continues to bend over for them I will stop watching as a fan. I'll be done with them.

China needs to be held accountable but it looks like the NBA will prostrate themselves over the Chinese money.

the sage of south central is now a mouthpiece for EPOCH times now?

I do agree though that the whole thing is about NIKE, not the NBA

NIKE is a much bigger biz in China than the NBA. like 10x bigger

80billion dollar industry vs 8 billion dollar industry. The NBA is a publicity stunt for Nike.
