RE: 1 million people in Hong Kong protest Extradition Law
Embattled Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said she has caused “unforgivable havoc” by igniting the political crisis engulfing the city and would quit if she had a choice, according to an audio recording of remarks she made last week to a group of businesspeople.

At the closed-door meeting, Lam told the group that she now has “very limited” room to resolve the crisis because the unrest has become a national security and sovereignty issue for China amid rising tensions with the United States.

“If I have a choice,” she said, speaking in English, “the first thing is to quit, having made a deep apology.”

Lam’s dramatic and at times anguished remarks offer the clearest view yet into the thinking of the Chinese leadership as it navigates the unrest in Hong Kong, the biggest political crisis to grip the country since the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.

Lam suggested that Beijing had not yet reached a turning point. She said Beijing had not imposed any deadline for ending the crisis ahead of National Day celebrations scheduled for October 1. And she said China had “absolutely no plan” to deploy People’s Liberation Army troops on Hong Kong streets. World leaders have been closely watching whether China will send in the military to quell the protests, as it did a generation ago in the bloody Tiananmen crackdown in Beijing.

RE: 1 million people in Hong Kong protest Extradition Law
Quote:Pro-government lawmakers told RTHK on Wednesday that they had been called to a meeting with Chief Executive Carrie Lam, with members of the National People's Congress, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and the Executive Council also expected to join the talks at 4pm.

With the extradition bill crisis having dragged on for almost three months now, this was thought highly likely to be the subject of the meeting.

Some media reports suggested Lam would formally withdraw the extradition bill, one of five key demands of anti-government protesters. The CE has repeatedly insisted that the bill is already "dead", after she announced in June that its passage through Legco was being suspended.

The reports saw the Hong Kong stock market index zoom up by about 1,000 points and the HSI was 3.1 percent in afternoon trade.

Meanwhile, users of the popular LIHKG chat forum and Telegram groups were discussing the possible withdrawal of the bill and asking members to vote on their future course of action.

Some insisted that the CE must meet all five of their demands, which also include an inquiry into alleged police brutality, and genuine universal suffrage.

Liberal Party leader Felix Chung and Roundtable lawmaker Michael Tien both told RTHK that they had been invited to meet Lam at Government House.

But they were tight-lipped about what would be discussed.

This guy Chilli Lucas streams the protests live and commentates in English.

I was at one of these tonight... at the mall having dinner. Then walked by a sit in. Hundreds of protestors occupied the center of the mall, chanting and singing. I stood by and watched for a bit. Got the chills... reminded me of being at a rave back in the day. It's 7 or 8am, sun is up, the party is about to end. You're savouring every last minute of the party. You don't know how many more tracks the Top INTL DJ will play, every track could be the last. That feeling times 1000. Then we left just as the riot police were arriving. Now I'm home watching the live stream.

white nationalists and Russia propagandists like to project the neocon angle onto everything. They believe this and the crisis in Venezuela to be orchestrated by the west.

I don't think this is orchestrated by the west, but they are certainly fanning the flames of dissent

on the other hand I dont' think they want to put too much pressure on China to ease up as it's probably playing into the end goal

china is being used as a "hey we're not as bad" example for the west.

if China goes +10 on the surveillance state, then USA can go +6

"Xi's Choice: Destroy Trump, or save him and weaken America" is what the Washington Post published a couple of weeks ago. Like they're Free Syrian Army begging to be liberated. At the very least tpb think of China as the lesser evil in all of this.
