The 1848 Revolutions that rocked most of Europe (birth of nations/Communism?)

Interesting time period, once again. Lots of 'funny stuff'. Napoleon's nephew is 'elected' the first President of the 2nd Republic, after the previous king abdicates in a hurry. Napoleon III then proceeds to declare himself EMPEROR just a few short years later.

Meanwhile numerous ideologies spread across Europe, socialism, secularism, Republicanism, nationalism and... of course... Communism. Communist Manifesto is published basically simultaneously with the first protests in Paris, that quickly forced the previous king to abdicate (not a common occurrence, btw, and usually kings will go to great lengths to NOT abdicate).

Apparently there were 'anti-semitic' conspiracy theories around this time, that rich Jews were behind socialism... Where do people come up with this stuff Wink

Big things were happening outside of Europe as well. The Mexican-American War ended resulting in a huge increase in US territory. This is in addition to Oregon becoming a US territory. The Second Anglo-Sikh War broke out in the Punjab. The Seneca Falls Convention is held in New York which marks the birth of feminism in the US. The Matale Rebellion against British rule breaks out in Sri Lanka. Mayans revolted in the Republic of Yucatan.

Really interesting, thx. So bizarre that feminism arises at a time when children are still working in coal mines and slaves are working in cotton fields.

Although, the first generation feminists really ADMIRED and looked up to men. They weren't man-haters, they viewed them as role models, and wished to emulate them.

1848 through to the Civil War is a very interesting time in the US.

"The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next" Abraham Lincoln, if only he knew what kids have been learning in school the last 30+ years!

"Human nature will not change. In any future great national trial, compared with the men of this, we shall have as weak and as strong, as silly and as wise, as bad and as good. Let us therefore study the incidents in [history] as philosophy to learn wisdom from and none of them as wrongs to be avenged."
Abraham Lincoln

Oh snap, Dick Tater is not gonna like that one.

Looks like workers were getting pissed at factory owners, and then some of the rich were getting nervous, so they sponsored the rise of socialism/communism, as a sort of steam pressure release valve.
