RE: Jab and Cross destroys 600 years of tradition in 6 seconds
Have you guys seen the stuff coming out of Eastern Europe, team melees, where everyone is in armor? Surprised no one has died yet, although I suppose the swords aren't exactly sharp, and everyone is covered in armor, head to toe.

One of the surprising things is that even 4 v4 it ends up looking like a mix between a wrestling match and a street fight, but ending up in top position disadvantages you, as much as your opponent. Basically, you are holding a guy down, but you are still in a prone position. You can get whacked in the (back of the) head by an opponent, even if he is engaged.

This leads me to think takedowns were used in medieval warfare (it is well known how well versed in wrestling they were, at that time) but you didn't Lay and Pray even for a second. You would get the takedown and get off your opponent immediately, probably strike him as he is getting up, unless you knew you were surrounded by friendlies (who could stab him while you are holding him down).

Showed me why things could change so quickly in a battle. Say you get a couple (medieval equivalent) knock downs, knock outs, or takedowns in a very short period of time, that could cause a big momentum shift, a big gap in the enemy's battle line.

^ all fake fights. notice how all the kyokushin guys go into bear hug mode right away

none of them commit with strikes.. only half ass kicks and shoves

Kyokushin is the ULTIMATE standup art along with MUAY THAI

I observed that the karate men were punching too. They were reasonably matched neither group appearing to be of professional prize-fighting stock. I felt it to be a fair contest of comparing and testing of amateur fighting capabilities of the average fellow.

the kyokushin guys seemed to be moving like legit kyokushin guys

they have a certain type of gait and stance that is easily identifiable

they weren't committing with any of the punches

there is no way Wing Chun can even hang with even a Kyokushin novice IMO

RE: Jab and Cross destroys 600 years of tradition in 6 seconds
I believe a young Bruce Lee was able to win a school boxing championship with only his training in WingChun to prepare him for the fights. And people can say what they will about quality of competition and what not but walking to that ring in front of a crowd and getting punched in the face at any level is no easy affair.

the point of this example being that I would not doubt that there are some WingChun fellows which could give good account of themselves in an altercation.

and really, it's like art, why do we enjoy things, because there is a certain attractive quality, it's part of what makes us human, we do things for pleasure, it's not always just "what's most practical" but also what appeals to our nature and I just read some article which I will see if I can locate about which celebrities train Martial Arts and I believe both Robert Downey Jr. and Christian Bale enjoying training WingChun.

"Christian Bale – Kung-Fu
Christian Bale was totally kung-fu fighting for his role as Batman in the most recent installment of the franchise, The Dark Knight Rises. In fact, the actor studies kung-fu at the Wing Chun Kung-fu Academy in Los Angeles."------

"he(Robert Downey Jr.) was big into Wing Chun, which kept him in shape.” Robert Downey Jr. incorporates Wing Chun into his everyday life—including his films.-----

Wing Chun works as a supplement to other styles

the trapping esp.

Anderson Silva uses it

but by itself it is a very bad system

also they are notorious for not training conditioning

a lot of TMA is like that. It took one element of combat and specialized taking it to a high-level, art or sport. Example: Aikido. Or like what the Russian Martial Art call "soft work"

and after one has developed a good base in combat sport then he may find himself more capable of effectively adding elements of TMA which will also keep his training interesting and diverse to inspire continued learning, progress, and evolution.

^ good post karasu

TMA is a great supplement assuming a strong base in a core style. ANDY had MT and BJJ, and incorporated very effective wing chun trapping into his arsenal.

Gomi was a strong wrestler, but credited TMA KARATE for his lethal bone crushing strikes.

Kyokushin was made for one on one combat, extremely effective striking method.

Wasn't Gomi also a pitcher, though? Surely throwing all those fast balls helped him develop strength and coordination?
