That was a complete joke.

Rickson does have some spiritual mojo though. He's definitely worshiped as a god by many. The Blackbelts I know that have rolled with him all confirm he is something special, even in his mid 50's.

For me it was actually like 2005, but I started off at a gym that was really well connected.

About 4 years ago, one of my Blackbelt buddies actually did train with Rickson and Kron in a tiny gym in LA for a few months. He confirmed that there is indeed something special about Rickson, and while Kron is Ricksons protege, and talented in his own right, doesn't have that same magical touch.

I was invited to join the training sessions, but the mat fee was like $50 and I was unemployed and super broke at the time and had to decline.

This BB friend is 6'1", 225lbs has fought MMA, competed in ADCC, also done TKD, Wing-Chun and Tai Chi in Asia. So he knows what the soft-style is all about and how to spot bullshido, he wouldn't be fooled by a charlatan. I trust his word on this. He was confident that Kron would get destroyed in MMA, but that has yet to be seen. I'll have to call him and see what he thought about Kron's UFC debut.

back in the day on the forums it was called "rickson's aura" lol

He does have some type of MOJO however he was scared SHITLESS of Sak back in the day

excuse after excuse

Sakuraba would have whooped him EASILY

also the funaki fight was a stiff work

Those who know, know! Big Grin

I agree. A fight with him and Sakuraba would have been legendary, but he couldn't risk losing the invincibility aura.

An undefeated guy like Mayweather is always accused of handpicking his opponents, but the risks he takes are HUGE compared to Rickson.

Was Funaki the best guy Rickson beat?

If you watch this, he tries reverse the Guillotine Funaki was going for, messes up, falls on his ass, and lazily upkicks.
These habits got his brothers into major trouble against Sakuraba. I can't see Rickson winning this fight.

yeah funaki was the best that rickson fought. funaki was also a known pro wrestler involved in a lot of phony fights

pancrase had tons of works back in the day

Funaki was also hugely overrated imo

I remember following that drama back in the day and Rickson would always make some excuse as to why he wouldn't fight sak

RE: Gracie first UFC win in 25 years
In hindsight that was a smart move, fighting Sakuraba was almost a guaranteed loss for him. Saku was part of new breed of fighter who was well rounded, and just plain better. The sport evolved more in 7 years than it had in the previous 60+ . If they fought it would've been like pitting Jack Johnson against Sonny Liston.

brawling toe to toe with the Clone of Big Nog was extremely impressive. he wasn't the same fighter post Wanderlei / Schembri and Crocop

Yeah it was amazing to see him going toe to toe with Nog and actually threatening with strikes

of course his strikes were weak, but they were connecting

Prime sak was just magical

Rickson didn't want none of that

Keep in mind sak was a natural 160-170 lb guy going up against an elite natural HW rogerio

yeah the sak/rogerio fight is kind of a forgotten fight.. but reviewing it now it seems amazing

sak did a great job

RE: Gracie first UFC win in 25 years
I don't much follow FightSport these days but when browsing the channels I was surprised to see a UFC showing which stated Kron Gracie and so I recorded for later viewing and enjoyed a bit of nostalgia and was impressed with the display of the classical effectiveness of Jiujitsu. There was no savage blood and beating....Kron closed the distance and subdued his opponent in a textbook execution of Jiujitsu proven to still be a very formidable system of self defense.

Of course there are the details of superb athletic conditioning which allowed him to do what he did and a certain amount of athletic strength and stamina is required to subdue a reasonably strong adversary.

Sakuraba was very special, a great wrestling base which is a fantastic foundation, a rare finishing element of Catch Wrestling to complete his education, combined with his own personal creative genius made for a good formula to create a great champion
