good point. If we observe the tooth and claw rule of nature then we will see that a rabbit doesn't try to fight a lynx!

the human animal possesses the unique quality of "problem-solving" thinking and so if we apply this intelligence to our need for personal self-defense then we will observe that escape and evasion running and tumbling skills is almost always the superior strategy and if/when cornered then a smaller fellow should apply advanced weapon technology of pepper-spray!

RE: Cardio vs Weightlifting
IMO i think lot of cardio is useless as well. Better to have explosive bursts- like an MMA fighter. Doing sprints etc is better. Tsunami ropes, Sledge Hammer on tire.
I get most of my cardio from rolling in BJJ.

Weight training is better for males as you get older anyway. I guess just dont overlift to hurt yourself.
Kettlebells are great too.

For streetfighting, you need to explode and be aware of your environment.
If it is a situation were you get into a fight with a guy at a bar- one on one.-I recommend muay thai/bjj

If you getting jumped unexpectadly, something were you cant get away fast. hit and run.

I was undefeated in evading the school bullies which tried to menace me thanks to my superior endurance and tumbling capabilities!

RE: Cardio vs Weightlifting
cardio does nothing for you that weight lifting also won't do. Wanna lose fat, a larger muscle mass will increase basal metabolic rate and help you stay lean. And there's the asthetic and health benefits of having a strong core.

RE: Cardio vs Weightlifting
The only place that I have visited that has regular street muggings is South Africa. And they certainly don't engage you hand-to-hand or 1 v 1.

Totally agree about sprints being more important than just jogging at a leisurely pace for a fixed time. That is why I love playing soccer. Could never run just for the sake of it, whether on a track or treadmill or crosscountry.

But stick a ball out on a field... All of a sudden I can run all day, and WANT to sprint.

oh boy, i am about to add to DJ's fire.

I have to agree with him. My whole life i have been doing martial arts and in the martial art classes from Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, Muay Thai and BJJ , the majority of the class is white and black. You would figure with martial arts asians would be interested but not the case. Matter of fact i am usually the only asian that knows a legitimate martial art.

In addition, his gym example is correct- at the gym , i go to i notice most of the asians do counterproductive exercises like spend an hour on the treadmill etc. These are young dudes less then 40 too. I was doing tsunami ropes one time and then i moved over to doing burpees in the corner and chinese guy asks me if that is a good workout to get cut. I just noticed he was on the treadmill for 40 min and barely broke a sweat.

I asked him how old he was he said 35, i said that workout your doing is only good for a 75 year old man who just wants to get good blood circulation.

I told him, next time you wanna follow my regime, see how you feel? He say's no i will stick with what i am doing. -OMG!

Frank Shamrock vs Phil Baroni would disagree.....also Lance Armstrong, the Diaz Bros, and also Rogers Rangers, the Apache, the Conquistadors, and the Elite Lewis&Clark Expedition

the offsprings are smartly raised to become successful AMERICAN DREAMS and not KungFu masters. Maybe IronBody training was useful in a environment where the life expectancy was not so long but in a land of gold where old age is a common achievement then arthritis sucks and the treadmill is a superior strategy to maintain comfortable longevity and a feel good old age retirement
