1982 SPECIAL REPORT: "THE MALL"
The mall replaced the downtown business district, what will replace the mall? Nothing? Are we doomed to be hermits who only do their shopping online?

Interesting CBS special report about shopping malls from 1982.

A lot of people don't realize this, but the idea of the planned suburb and the super-reginal shopping mall originated in Overland Park, KS outside of Kansas City.

In addition to the online competition, there are other reasons to avoid malls.

Malls are just too big nowadays. Smaller malls would be fine. Focus on eating places and high end brands. Stuff you need to try on like shoes and jewelry. But 2 million sq ft is a standard mall but probably ten times what it needs to be.

I like malls in a way, used to love going there to look at chicks but now it's easier to buy online. They also have terrible hours.

It's funny that you say that. The map cop from 1982 said people go to the mall to escape racial violence.

People will always find a pretext to be around people. For instance they go to Starbucks and pay 2.25 min for a tall when they could brew the same coffee at home for a fraction of the price.

Yep, whilst online shopping is hurting stores that sell merchandise, local malls that offer things like fresh fruit, groceries, clothing, and food and coffee etc, will always survive. They just have to adapt to ensure that people have a reason to go there. Free Wifi in Malls, and 'click and collect' type purchasing, is also helping them to attract the online generation.

But it's easy to see that the Amazon and Ebay type business models are going to continue to become the norm.

I'm just trying to figure this shit out like you are.
