You go dig holes for 40 hrs and then come back and tell me how hard it is to work at a bank.

mental work is also tiring.

MENTAL STRESS probably kills faster than PHYSICAL STRESS

at the end of the day both can break you in different ways, but as someone who has done both, there's a lot to be said for doing physical labor as opposed to being caught up in the headfuck of a modern corporate environment.

Being able to walk away from the day's work without an after thought is a blessing.

I'm just trying to figure this shit out like you are.

RE: the explosion of bullshit jobs / universal basic income discussion
The question that this article doesn't answer is WHY employers are hiring for bullshit jobs. Shouldn't there be some explanation as to why companies would pay for a 'VP Regional Sales Development - WestUS' or 'Product Director of User Experience'. Why would companies throw away so much money on salary, office-space, health insurance, 401k, travel expenses etc. if they didn't get a return on hiring these people.

What's that the name of that economics principle / theory, where to determine the number of wealth creating employees, you calculate the square-root of the total number of employees in the organization. So in a 144 person Tech Company, 12 people are building the product, while 132 are doing sales, marketing, finance, IT, HR, administrative assistants etc.

because maybe the economy doesn't depend on businesses being exactly profitable

it depends on getting a lifeline from PE firms or Venture Funds.

tons of places don't make money. guitar center has been around for years and years and I doubt they even break even.

amazon is famous for not making a profit most of the time.

it's about GREAT STORYTELLING AND LOTS OF OPM "other people's money"

Interesting insight; when you approach something from the perspective of the Individual and Rational Self-Interest, you immediately step into the Libertarian / Austrian world-view.

This is probably why Libertarian debaters like Shapiro, Molyneux tend to wipe the floor. They can corner the opposition by asking why an enlightened individual would make such a decision about such and such. From that perspective, Free-Market Economics always works.

RE: the explosion of bullshit jobs / universal basic income discussion
the goal is to crush out the little guy and they are willing to burn cash for YEARS AND DECADES to consolidate business.

so it all begins to make sense

the bullshit jobs are created also to prevent "human resources" from working at independent places as well. brain drain into the corporate machine.

govt "chosen" places are designated to get the cash flow from the firms.

that is why the fiat money system is one of the main enemies of the free world

also the way the stock market works is that investors can pump TONS OF MONEY into companies that are not profitable but have a great story. amazon is the king of this.

SOUNDCLOUD also has never turned a profit but has run a business for over 10 years. EVERYONE THAT STARTED IT AND FOUNDED IT CONTINUES TO GET PAID. so yeah THEY PROFITED even though the business didn't make any money. even if it burns out and investors stop investing, everyone got rich in the process.

people in the club get the funding. those not in the club don't.

they need the extra relatively "high paying" jobs to keep the system afloat too.

imagine if lawsuits were reduced by 50%

imagine if we switched to a more efficient flat tax system that would require less accountants and tax preparation bullshit

TONS OF JOBS LOST

these are all bullshit jobs that theoretically aren't need if efficiency was the main concern

The jobs that would be lost are jobs that aren't real in the first place. They shouldn't exist.

When money is freed up to create wealth in other ways those people will easily find real jobs.

Remember the breaking glass to hire more glass makers theory.

The thing about broken windows is that they're bad for the economy as a whole, but good for the window makers.
