chinese govt laid the smackdown on this dude:

After his tirades against traditional martial arts made waves online and generated massive backlash, a previously cocky mixed martial arts fighter has now suddenly gone quiet.

MMA fighter Xu Xiaodong has been taunting and challenging traditional Chinese martial arts masters in the past weeks, culminating in the 10-second decimation of a Tai Chi practitioner last month.

The Beijing-based fighter has been dismissing traditional martial artists as frauds and even stated that he could even take on two or three fighters at a time. He also offered 1.2 million yuan ($174,000) in prize money to anyone who will be able to beat him in combat.

But while he may have impressed some with his fighting style, his continued heckling of martial arts disciples has sparked outrage among many observers and followers of various disciplines. Many view his proclamations against traditional martial arts as insults to what is highly considered as the foundation of traditional Chinese culture.

Observers point out that the aggressiveness of Xu’s fighting style is not meant to be forced to collide against the ways of martial arts practitioners. While MMA is a competitive combat sport, martial arts isn’t.
The government-backed Chinese Wushu Association stated on its website that the now viral fight “violates the morals of martial arts.” The same point was also expressed by the Chinese Boxing Association, reports The New York Times.

Chinese state news agency Xinhua blasted Xu saying he was a “crazy guy” in an article, stating that the match had people questioning the importance of the Chinese martial arts.

It is now reported that the widespread backlash has caused the MMA fighter to go into hiding. His Weibo account has also been taken down following his recent tirades as Chinese authorities have reportedly begun clamping down on the issue. Observers believe that the government’s involvement may put a leash on Xu for good.

“I’ve lost everything, my career, and everything,” he was quoted in a message circulating on Chinese social media. “I think many people misunderstand me. I’m fighting fraudulence, but now I’ve become the target.”

Another TMA master has stepped up to an MMA fighter, with similar results. It's now being referred to as the 10 second challenge in some MMA groups.

The martial artists do have a valid point. A big part of traditional m.a. is about training discipline, perserverance, achieving perfection in form and mind and body etc. Where you have on the other side MMA and other competition based sports who's main goal is to knock somebody out as fast as possible by all "means" necessary. They also are build on discipline etc. but i do believe on a lower mental and perfectional level than the tradiotional m.a. who are built on ancient training methods and have cultural roots. It's like one guy nurtering a bonsai for years till it's perfect with tiny scissors etc. and his neighbour is mowing his lawn every 2 weeks with a john deere. It's both gardening..

But what i agree with the MMA fighter is the level of fraud in traditional m.a. The superhuman abillities some claim to have trained. And i do believe he wanted to show that.. but unfortunatly m.a. is rooted in the culture and this is received as a kind of blasfemie. New generation vs Old generation..

Ask for the blue pill. The rabbit hole isn't that nice

Seems like only the "internal" stylists are taking the bait. Tai Chi in the OP. then Baguazhang, and Wudang. All soft, internal styles. I'd like to see a hard style take the challenge, like Hung gar, or Choy Li Fut. They'd probably still lose but would put up a better fight.

the hard style guys would do well with a few months of sprawl training imo.

the MMA guy here is in his late 30's and is just an avg. fighter. Most likely below KOTC standards.

there are also SHUAI JIAO people I think they can take this dude.

we all know a lot of TMA Is bullshit and is for spiritual or for health purposes. you don't have to shit on him like this. So while I disagree with the govt clamping down on him, I can kind of see why they did it. this dude is singlehandedly destroying the reputation of TMA in front of 1.6 billion chinese

just saw the movie tai chi master it's so awesome.

jet li was hardstyle shaolin but perfected his fighting by studying tai chi.

soft styles can def. help with fluidity and movement after mastering a hard style

If TMA guys didn't live in a fantasy world where they believe their masters are battle-hardened demi-gods this would be a non-issue. Their cult-like delusion is what makes these defeats so crushing.

Do Yoga guys or Capoiera guys lose their shit when one of their own loses an MMA fight? No. Why should they? I am a fan of Kungfu and Chigung and the like, but you have to be realistic about what purpose it serves or you're going to waste your time, your life or even become a false prophet.

i agree. met a lot of delusional TMA fans or practitioners that still believe in the one touch death moves.

i'm like c'mon. I also love it when they say "my master is too dangerous for MMA" or "MMA has too many rules, he only fights on the street"

but still I think TMA teaches people a lot of spiritual principles and discipline that are useful. modern MMA is too gumbo jack of all trades

He does have a point though.

I think he would do better against that MMA fighter than the Tai Chi guy did.

I'm just trying to figure this shit out like you are.
