RE: Speaker and Headphone discussion thread
also I think headphones shouldn't be technically flat as the ear has special properties that change the sound.
They have to be tuned to be flat.. so a freq response won't really show the whole reality

what is your preferred headphone rezin?

RE: Speaker and Headphone discussion thread
^ That's correct. The speaker is too close to the ear and is enclosed, so perfectly flat would't work.

There is also the problem of properly measuring headphone frequency which is not a straight forward affair.

Eventually I wanna get my hands on some Japanese Stax electrostatic earspeakers.

Electrostats have a flat diaphragm with different dispersion characteristics from the dynamic cone phones out there.

Also because the diaphragm is much lighter than a dynamic transducer (there is no copper coil) it has better transient response. All in all the Staxes are supposed to be the best.

But out of the standard consumer headphones I've used I like the various Sony mdr studio variants. I also had some Koss of the same nature that were good, but I think the Sony ones beat them.

Headphones in the 80s sounded better than anything in the price range today. An old JVC or Sony cassette player with the wire over-head phones had awesome bass response that is hard to get these days without spending big bux.

Pods are horrible and fall out of the ears and have bad sound and volume.

An external amp is a must for hi-fi.

yeah the good thing about the SONYs is you don't need extra power. it does fine on regular DACs

More to the point about amps. The amp is not just loudening everything. The amp controls the diaphragm. Depending on the circuit you get more or less distortion at different volumes.

Different phone designs will have different efficiency in how much power they need to sound their best.

More efficient does not mean a lesser sound quality necessarily, but it's no coincidence that the most resolving phones need a lot more power than your general consumer phones.
