Mark Gastineau has Alzheimer's, dementia and Parkinsons...
He's a poster boy for the abolition of full contact football???!!! I remember years ago they were designing safer football helmets, pad, etc. Whatever happened to all that???!!! A football helmet gives the wearer the false idea that they are fully protected against hits...like boxing gloves, it's more about the protecting the person being hit as opposed to the wearer...

"Former New York Jets All-Pro defensive end Mark Gastineau revealed Thursday that he's been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and dementia..."

football is probably more dangerous than MMA.

MMA is dangerous but it's safe in the sense that there are ref stoppages and no standing 8 counts. also if you lose by submission you don't suffer much head trauma.

And in Australian Rules Football they don't wear helmets and pads, etc. But they tackle rough and make it a violent game but because of lack of a helmet they don't go in with the head in their tackles. So even with minimal protection and maximum rough-house playing they don't suffer the long-term damage that American football has...

american football is savage. don't get why people like it so much.

soccer is much more elegant. I like rugby more as well. American football uses too much equipment. same with hockey. sports should be simple.

the way I see it soccer is the best analogue for war and MMA is the best analogue for one on one standoffs

Would be interested to know the stats for neurological injuries for different contact sports -- fighting, Aussie rules, rugby league and union, American football, football, hockey, etc.

Yes, I think equipment give people a false sense of security. It's almost as if people will then take greater risks during the game, and the rules around hitting will be less restricted.

Rugby league and union, as well as Aussie rules football, are probably the most brutal non-fighting contact sports. Yet, my hunch is that they are also (generally) safer to play. Might be wrong about that, though.
