V8, 4.6L, 230 Hp
Rear Wheel Drive
Boat-Like Loose Steering
Soft Smooth Suspension
Bench Seat, Huge Trunk
Impact-Ready Steel Frame
Accident-Proof Rubber Bumper
High Capacity Power Grid for mods
22 MPG Hwy
Can Survive 400,000 miles

The Police Interceptor, Ford Crown Victoria, Lincoln Town Car and Mercury Grand Marquis are all the same car. My first CVPI was a POS but cost me only $1500. The car I drive now is a little more discrete and was formerly owned by an Austrian Bounty Hunter. I bought it for $3500. Solid, well performing newer ones go for like $7500.

There is a reason this was the US Gov't Vehicle for almost 3 decades. It was very sad to see them go out-of-production during the Automotive Industry Bailout mess. Saudi Arabia got the last batch in 2012. Ford is now pushing the pussy environmentally-friendly Taurus and other 'non-pursuit' Security Guard type vehicles. Police Agencies don't like it and are going to Dodge Chargers instead.

The only problem with these cars is they are very heavy with a lot torque, and RWD. It causes wear-and-tear in the path between the Engine and the Rear Wheels. Acceleration would be better on a lighter frame. Parking is very challenging too.

Still, in an age of mass-produced Chinese crap, disposable plastic and planned obsolescence, these were an enduring symbol of American Industry. Sad to see them go. I'll be bitterly clinging to them for as long as I can find them. Wink

very cool post.

From your posting style I assumed you drove a japanese car. The interceptor is more like a tough guy car.

I did not know these guys were so robust. so they are basically like hummer sedans.

i always get tripped out by them because I have learned over the years to recognize cop cars, but these converts always set off a false negative in my po-dar.

Those who know, know! Big Grin

In CA you need a license to attend police auctions. Guys with the licenses usually purchase them in lots of 10-20 and do the minimum work on them to resell them. The police are pretty heavy-handed when they strip them.

My first 2005 CVPI for $1500 was a bad experience. It had been in an accident and the transmission went out the first week, then I found out the engine-mount was compromised. Plusses were articulating spot-lights, tighter steering and pretty decent speed. Still, it lasted me 2 years and tens of thousands of miles, and 4 long trips up and down the California Coast. No way I would have gotten more miles out of any other car that price.

I bought my current car is a Grand Marquis I bought for $3500 and it's lasted me about 3 years with about $1000 of engine maintenance. It's a little classier than a Police Interceptor and very, very comfortable. I'll probably wait a couple years to sell it and get a decked out 2011 CVPI. The Ford bailout caused these cars to be canceled, and the first-run batch in 2012 all went to Saudi Arabia. I'm hoping they make a comeback by 2022.

You should be able to find some on Craigslist wherever you're at.

Thanks!

I know where to start now. Once I find those resellers in my area, I'm all set???!!! And the price $3500, is the $1500 in your day???!!! $3500 I can do. Plus a little extra for the paperwork???!!!

Thanks. I always disliked meathead shit. I hung out in the MMA scene during the height of the Tapout Era and the culture never wore off on me.

When my car tanked in college, I inherited Grandma's barely running Crown Vic that was on it's way to the Junkyard. I thought it was an ugly POS old-person car, but I had no alternative. Almost nothing worked, the Windows were stuck down and I got pelted by hail for 4hrs driving through the Bay Area, it stalled at stoplights, and the battery was bad so I'd have to get out and use a battery-box to jump it, and hop back in. Yet.. after driving it for a month I was hooked.

Wikipeida says "final full-frame rear-wheel-drive passenger sedan produced in North America". They are smooth rides likes nothing else. I taught my girlfriend how to drive in it back when she was like 20, she smashed into a few stationary objects hard and the car barely even scratched.

I remember seeing a episode of Cops where this typical donut/hitler-moustache sheriff was retelling a story where while in a high-speed pursuit around Cornfields, he turned a blind corner and got in a head-on collision with a Semi. "Well... I was in my 'vic so I knew I'd be alright... *Tear*, but I'm sorry to say I can't say the same for the other poor fella'." Yeah, the dude in the semi was killed, but the cop got away with just a leg injury...

No, $1500 was me being young and getting swindled by a douchebag who knew the transmission was going bad. I was living off student-loans at the time, in a pinch, and didn't have too many options.

I think for $3000 you should be able to find one that will run with little maintenance for 2-3 years; something that is fun that you can beat-up, prank/spook people.

For $5500 and up you should feel like you're driving an Attack Helicopter.

Remember that they are heavy cars, and they're built for durability first and foremost. You probably won't be able to beat little 4-cylinder Japanese cars from stoplights, but you will be able to rip up from 60-100 without feel like you're hurting the car, and comfortably cruise on crappy roads with the loose suspension. Parking will be a bitch...

The FBI/Secret-Service/US-Marshall models are built bullet-proof. As cool as that sounds you want to avoid those because the extra weight makes them slugs and puts them down to 15 mpg.

I've heard the California Highway Patrol ones often have 1/2 the Trunk converted into a extended Gas Tank, making the capacity something like triple, so they can outlast any suspect trying to flee to Mexico, anywhere in the State... Many also have pull-down Jet-Fighter like harnesses which hold the driver steady while weaving through traffic, performing PIT maneuvers, or impacting and wrecking. It's basically warrior-mode for your car.

Mostly they're going to pull all the cool stuff out before civilians get them. Still, you can buy the mods aftermarket and add them legally. Ever wanted an Ammo Dispenser in your trunk?

You'll also want to avoid ones driven by Urban City cops, because they wreck the cars by gunning it from stop-lights. The cars are heavy and all the on/off torque will jack the transmission, differential and engine-mount.

Stupid Ford Execs dumped their prized stallion for the pussy Ford Taurus.

It looks like a Euro-Cop car and it's #1 feature is "Ecoboost". Yeah... I'm sure that's going to strike fear into the hearts of hardened criminals.

Quote:Ford's discontinuation of the Panther platform cars led to the closure of the St. Thomas plant in Canada and the loss of over a thousand jobs, as well as job losses at suppliers in the U.S.[36] The passing of the Crown Victoria and its derivatives also marked the final demise of the 'traditional' full-size American sedan - Ford's offering had been the last bastion of the format with GM and Chrysler having already discontinued their equivalent models.
