China successfully carried out a flight test of its state-of-the-art high-speed maneuvering warhead last week, sources in the Pentagon said. The trial took place just days after a hypersonic glider was reportedly tested by Russia.

The DF-ZF hypersonic glide vehicle was launch on Friday by a ballistic missile fired from the Wuzhai site in central China, unnamed US military officials told the Washington Free Beacon website.

The maneuvering glider was tracked by American satellites as it was traveling at the speed of several thousand kilometers per hour along the edge of the atmosphere towards an impact area in the west of the country, the sources said.

It was the seventh air trial of the Chinese glide vehicle, with six previous tests conducted in 2014 and 2015 also having been successful.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, US intelligence fears that Beijing may use DF-ZF (formerly codenamed WU-14 by the Pentagon), capable of reaching speeds of over 11,000 kilometers per hour, to deliver nuclear weapons bypassing even the most complex of missile defense systems.

The glider could also become a part of a conventional strategic strike weapon that would enable China to hit targets anywhere in the world within just an hour.

Glide vehicles are lifted to the high upper atmosphere by ballistic missiles and then glide at speeds five times faster than the speed of sound.

Pentagon spokesman, Cmdr. Bill Urban, declined to comment on the fresh Chinese maneuvering warhead test, but stressed that the US military “do monitor Chinese military modernization carefully.”

Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower, Randy Forbes, told the Washington Free Beacon that he’s worried by the Chinese tests.

“China’s repeated test of a hypersonic glide vehicle demonstrates Beijing is committed to upending both the conventional military and nuclear balance, with grave implications for the stability of Asia,” Forbes said.

On April 22, Russian Strategic Missile Forces conducted an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch, testing a hypersonic cruise missile.

An Interfax source said that the launch from a missile deployment area in the Orenburg Region on the border with Kazakhstan was a success.

The Russian Defense Ministry declined to comment on reports about what is believed to be Moscow’s second hypersonic glider test.

In mid-April, the director of the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency, James Syring, told the US Senate that two countries, the names of which he didn’t reveal, pose a growing hypersonic missile threat.

However, the Washington Free Beacon warns that the Pentagon “is doing little to deal with the emerging hypersonic missile threat.”

The Missile Defense Agency has not funded any direct programs to counter hypersonic arms in its 2017 fiscal budget of $7.5 billion.

This year, it asked for funds to work on a low-powered laser to target hypersonic missiles, but its tests will only start in 2021 when China’s DF-ZF will likely already be in service, the website stressed.

Quote:Hypersonic warhead for future ICBM successfully tested in Russia – report

Published time: 22 Apr, 2016 10:07

Russian Strategic Missile Forces have conducted a successful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch, testing a hypersonic cruise vehicle, Interfax reported, citing a source familiar with the issue.

The test launch was performed Tuesday using an RS-18A strategic ballistic missile (UR-100N, NATO designation SS-19 Stiletto) from a missile deployment area in the Orenburg Region, the source said, adding that the test was a success.

Russia’s Defense Ministry has neither denied nor confirmed the report.

All modern nuclear warheads are delivered on targets using ballistic trajectory that can be calculated, therefore such warheads could be intercepted. Hypersonic warheads currently in design would be capable of maneuvering by yaw and pitch, eventually becoming impossible to intercept, thus making any existing and upcoming missile defense system impotent.

The new warhead is likely to be readied for the upcoming RS-28 Sarmat heavy liquid-propelled ICBM, which is expected to enter testing later this year.

Tests of the new Russian ICBM RS-28 Sarmat, which is meant to replace the outgoing heavy silo-based Soviet R-36M missiles, dubbed “Satan” by NATO, are likely to begin in summer this year.

The RS-28 has been in development since 2009 and is scheduled to start replacing the old ICBMs in 2018.

The new missile, weighing at least 100 tons, will reportedly be capable of carrying a payload of up to 10 tons on any trajectory. This means an attack on a target could be made from any direction, i.e. RS-28 could start from Russia and fly in the direction of Antarctica, make a circumterrestrial flight and hit targets on the other side of the planet from an unexpected direction.

The Russian military plans to put Sarmat in service in late 2018 and complete replacing older variants of Satan by 2020.

So, just out of curiosity. How are Russians attitudes towards immigrated Americans?

RE: China successfully tests nuclear-capable hypersonic missile – Pentagon sources
This is Russian tech. All of China's advanced stuff is bought or licensed Russian tech. Russia has 2 maneuverable MIRV nuclear ICBM systems, impossible to defend against any American missile shield. Even their regular 17Kmph ICBM's are impossible to engage with anything the US has.

The US has no analogue to these maneuverable re-entry vehicle systems. They are 20+ years behind Russia in nuclear missile technology. American spent trillions focusing on star wars anti-missile shield systems that have shown little or no viable, or scalable, technology. This was evidently a mistake as the Russians have been steadily developing long range & ICBM missile systems that will actively evade any anti-missiles systems the US can muster along with their uniquely mobile impossible to target Topol systems.

All the US has for viable anti-missile defense is the patriot system which is short range & only effective against slower moving scuds or homemade hamas rockets. The pentagon has failed to develop any long-range, or anti-ICBM missiles, that can engage a 17Kmph ICBM. And, even when they do, the Russians already will have them checkmated.

The US's laser & mag-lev gun ballistic missile defense is a pipe dream. The only viable systems the US has been able to develop are short range and require HUGE city-sized electrical plants, or 747's near-filled with tonnes of chemical for a chemical laser. Nothing has been shown to be effective outside of short ranges. The huge power infrastructure for them is also very limiting as to where they can be mounted. Star wars has been a complete fail.

As for Americas nuclear weapons... everything is 60's-80's technology with near-zero modernization of existing systems. The Russians are completely dominating the US with their 5th generation-type modern nuclear weapons platforms recently brought on line and that are soon to be deployed.

Same goes for anti-ICBM/anti-satellite/anti-cruise missile/anti-ship/400mph super cavetating torpedoes. US aircraft carriers & warships have no chance against the last 2. Zero.

it is important to understand... that most all of Russia's current world leading technologies in this arena has been on the shelf since the cold war waiting to be fine-tuned and manufactured. That is up to a 40-50 year advancement over the US today regardless of what young American internet kids say.

At least a couple of American generals have stated Russian subs & their anti-ship weapons systems would be the deathnell of an America fleet in the first hours of a major conflict with Russia. This is a truth known in senior American military circles but you won't understand it from watching US made for TV wars vs no-tech never-world-power countries like Iraq, or in Afghanistan vs a few thousand mujahideen in caves.

Mark my words... you will never see 1 single American aircraft carrier within 800 miles of any Russian coastal region. Baltic Sea, inland sea, Arctic Ocean (summer) or it's far eastern Pacific shore. And to that, they all fled from just offshore Syria to way out in middle of the Mediterranean when Russia entered Syria.

key point. OHHH AAHHHHHH. CHina has "better tech"

WE NEED MORE MONEY FROM THE 'MURICAN PEOPLE

this song and dance is so predictable. Us has the most advanced technology overall. I have no doubt about it.
