Question Did deleted Hillary Emails reveal her lesbian lovers?
The Enquirer isn't exactly a reliable source, but I wouldn't dismiss this theory just yet. The recently released batch of emails from Hillary's private server reinforce the notion that Hillary is strangely close with Huma Abedin. Recall that Anthony Weiner's mistress said that Weiner and Abedin had an "open relationship", and that Gennifer Flowers said the same about Bill and Hillary.

The recently released emails also show that Hillary lied when she said that she never sent classified material using her personal server. The government blacked out passages 64 times in this latest batch of emails to "protect national security". Sounds like classified information to me.

EXCLUSIVE: HILLARY CLINTON LESBIAN LOVERS NAMED IN SECRET EMAILS

http://www.nationalenquirer.com/celebrit...ret-emails

Hillary Clinton isn’t just caught in a political scandal over her missing emails from her stint as secretary of state – she’s also terrified of personal revelations about a secret lesbian lifestyle!

Now a world-exclusive investigation by The National ENQUIRER reveals that some of the presidential candidate’s famously “deleted” emails are packed full of lesbian references and her lovers’ names.

“I don’t think she’s so concerned about emails referring to her as secretly gay,” said a Clinton insider. “That’s been out for years – her real fear is that the names of some of her lovers would be made public!”

The ENQUIRER learned the list of Hillary’s lesbian lovers includes a beauty in her early 30s who has often traveled with Hillary; a popular TV and movie star; the daughter of a top government official; and a stunning model who got a career boost after allegedly sleeping with Hillary. Hillary made the huge mistake of mixing public and private messages while using her personalized email server – before risking a massive scandal by refusing to make the documents public.

“That’s clearly why she went to the extraordinary step of deleting everything,” the high-ranking source told The ENQUIRER .

Hillary is particularly concerned about intimate emails to longtime aide Huma Abedin – who married U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner in a ceremony that many ridiculed as a political arrangement. Anthony later resigned over extramarital sexting scandals, after porn star Sydney Leathers said that she believed he was in an open marriage.

“I think a lot of the time when we were speaking, Huma was probably with Hillary,” she charged, at the time.

One exchange between the women had Hillary mistakenly responding to political correspondence with an email that seemed to be about decorating.

Added the insider: “That makes you wonder if any sensitive information was sent to her romantic partners!”

The scandal unraveled in March, when Hillary revealed she deleted over 30,000 emails, insisting the messages were just “things you typically find in inboxes.”

Gennifer Flowers confirms Hillary Clinton’s homosexuality

http://www.westernjournalism.com/gennife...sexuality/

Former mistress and current sex advice columnist Gennifer Flowers recently sat down for an interview during which she revealed many insights into the Clinton clan. In addition to recounting her affair with a pre-presidential Bill Clinton, she candidly offered knowledge of Hillary’s sexuality.

Though rumors have long swirled regarding the 2016 presidential hopeful’s homosexuality, Flowers said her former lover confirmed those suspicions.

Saying she “never considered theirs a traditional marriage,” Flowers explained that Bill Clinton offered a characteristically unrefined critique of his wife’s extramarital exploits.

“He said Hillary had eaten more p***y than he had,” she recalled.

According to Flowers, rumors of a romantic relationship between Hillary and Huma Abedin was not surprising. Married to disgraced politician Anthony Weiner, Abedin also stood by her husband throughout a prolonged sex scandal.

Flowers said she could offer only speculation into that issue, though, and based her comments only on direct conversations with Bill Clinton.

“I don’t know Huma or the Weiners,” she said. “I just know what Bill told me and that was that he was aware that Hillary was bisexual and he didn’t care.”

Flowers said she applauds Hillary for standing by her man despite his public infidelity, though she concluded that her faithfulness was due in large part to her own political aspirations.

“Absolutely that was her reason for sticking by him,” she added, “and he’s going to stick by her because he owes her that.”

Recalling her own relationship with the former president, Flowers said she feels the two would have eventually ended up together had it not been for the arrival of the Clintons’ only child.

He was “able to have it all” prior to 1980, she said, noting that “when they had Chelsea and he became governor, the stakes became higher.”

Hillary’s political supporters will surely argue that, even if true, the secretive nature of illicit sexual activity has no bearing on how an individual can govern. Considering the implosion caused during the last half of Bill Clinton’s second term due to the Monica Lewinsky scandal, however, one can certainly make the argument that a president is more effective without the additional baggage.

RE: Did deleted Hillary Emails reveal her lesbian lovers?
The new Linda Tripp interview is worth reading if you have the time. If you don't, I've made some of the best parts bold below.

EXCLUSIVE: 'Hillary must NEVER become President', says the woman who exposed Bill's affair with Monica. Former Clinton West Wing assistant Linda Tripp says Democratic contender is a liar who treats the public with contempt

Linda Tripp, now 65, was a civil servant who had a ringside seat during Clinton's administration with office directly adjacent to Hillary's
She exposed President Clinton affair with Monica because it was the culmination of years of so much corruption
Although she was vilified for her role in the scandal, she breaks years of silence to tell Daily Mail Online she would do it again
During the bimbo eruptions Hillary 'destroyed women so that their stories never saw the light of day,' Tripp says
She went from being a lackluster First Lady with unimpressive approval numbers to First Victim
Hillary will stop at nothing to achieve her end - the Presidency - and see the public as plebians easily seduced into believing her, says Tripp

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-...ident.html

It was the scandal that saw Bill Clinton impeached and which threatened to bring down his presidency. For many, it continues to define it to this day.

But according to the woman who outed Monica Lewinsky as the president's mistress, the real story was never about Monica. It was about 'subornation of perjury, obstruction of justice… a true abuse of power.' And it was about Hillary.

Because, according to Linda Tripp, it was Hillary who manipulated and stage managed the story, converting herself from a lackluster First Lady with unimpressive approval ratings to admirable First Victim - the blindsided wife standing by her man.

She made him forgivable. She 'orchestrated the cover up' and she made damn sure that she moved on. Nothing, and no-one, was going to stand in her way.

Linda Tripp, whose recorded conversations with Lewinsky - submitted to independent counsel Kenneth Starr - exposed the truth of the affair that both Lewinsky and Clinton had sought to deny, has never spoken fully until now.

After more than a decade of silence Tripp, 65, has chosen to speak out. In an exclusive interview with Daily Mail Online the woman who had a ringside seat throughout Clinton's administration has given a damning insight into - and assessment of- Hillary as the 'key player' in the scandals of the Clinton presidency.

She describes Hillary as the true 'ruler' of the White House through her husband's administration; tells how she watched Hillary 'blatantly lie' to the American people; describes her as utterly 'ruthless' in her pursuit of power; and voices her belief that Hillary must never gain the presidency - the position that has always been her goal and to which she has always believed herself entitled.

According to Tripp: 'In her mind she would be part of a coronation instead of an election.

'This has been planned for so many years. I remember one of the quotes in my first week in the Oval Office which was the week after Clinton's first inauguration.

'Everybody had this little mantra, 'Eight years for Bill. Eight years for Hill.' And when I asked a senior person, 'What does that mean?' He said, 'Well eight years for his administration and eight years for hers.

'So this is a runaway train. Nobody is going to stop it.'

Tripp explained: 'I think the most compelling thing about Hillary is that she will stop at nothing to achieve her end and that she views the public as plebeians easily seduced into believing her point of view.'

Tripp's office was directly adjacent to Hillary's second floor West Wing office for the entire time she served at the Clinton White House, with the exception of the first three months during which she sat directly outside the Oval office. Her position offered her unparalleled access to, and a unique perspective on, both the couple and the administration.

Speaking today she revealed: 'I believe for all his faults as a flawed man, Bill Clinton is not as unscrupulous as his wife. He is complicit but he is not as deceitful as Hillary Clinton is. Don't get me wrong, they are both missing the integrity chip but while she is inherently dishonorable, his seems to be learned behavior.

'Hillary Clinton ruled the White House even as early as 1993 and every scandal that originated in the Clinton administration was the brainchild of Hilary.

'When I think of Hillary Clinton I think of a lingering taint of scandal and wrongdoing and, in my opinion, possible criminal activity.'

And behind it all was, according to Tripp, the pursuit of the Clintons' 'common goal' – power.

She explained: 'She has stood by him all these years because she needed him. In 1992 no female, least of all she, would have been elected to the highest office in the land.

'Their focus has always been power and the accumulation of that power. There were just so many things in the White House that made it abundantly clear to anyone in their radius that he was the elected official but she was the one with the actual power.'

And, according to Tripp: 'When a couple is as focused as they are on a goal there are many, many things that one overlooks to achieve that. Nothing is allowed to stand in the way. That means no circumstance, no person.'

The most obvious examples of this single-minded pursuit came in Hillary's treatment of the series of 'bimbo eruptions' that threatened to derail Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign and continued to surface throughout his presidency.

Tripp said: 'His political success was largely dependent upon Hillary. He owed her a great deal. As is widely acknowledged, Hillary took care of all the 'bimbo eruptions' of which there were thousands in order to present to the world an electable candidate.

'In this endeavor she was ruthless. She destroyed women so that their stories never saw the light of day.'

And in the case of those stories that did surface she orchestrated an all-out attack on the women's credibility.

Tripp is in no doubt, for example, that Hillary lay behind the marginalizing of Gennifer Flowers who came forward in 1992 claiming that she had enjoyed a 12-year love affair with Clinton, then Governor of Arkansas and presidential hopeful.

Tripp said: 'Gennifer Flowers, by coming forward, was marginalized despite the fact that according to Clinton insiders at the time everything she said was true.

'She was one of a cast of thousands and they were disposed of in a way that trivialized and marginalized their impact. At the end of the day the public was left with the sense that this couldn't possibly all be true.

'It became easier to believe that these claims must be the work of a vast right wing conspiracy of politically motivated people who would stop at nothing to undermine their forward trajectory.'

When it came to Monica Lewinsky Tripp said: 'Hillary was not only aware of Monica Lewinsky she ensured that Monica was removed from the White House and in the end went from being a lack luster First Lady with unimpressive approval numbers to wronged wife. Literally within the blink of an eye she propelled herself to First Victim status. This turned the corner for Hillary.

'Women across the world could certainly understand her position of standing by her man, finding it admirable that she was working on her marriage, unaware that it was a charade.'

In Tripp's opinion: 'She has that particular scandal to thank for her Senate candidacy and election and for everything that followed.'

But while the 'bimbo eruptions' may have grabbed headlines and attention they were, according to Tripp, far from the most significant scandals to rock the Clinton administration or to be covered-up by Hillary.

She explained: 'I can't emphasize enough how relatively insignificant the bimbo eruptions were compared to the real issues.

'In the case of Monica Lewinsky the story was never really about Monica or Linda Tripp. It was about subornation of perjury and obstruction of justice and a true abuse of power on the part of a sitting president.

'That should have been the story. It never was.

'And so it gave Monica her much needed fifteen minutes and it took the rest of us along with it but the actual crux of the entire issue escaped most.

'And now the very person who orchestrated that cover up and all the other cover ups over the years including those surfacing today is running for president of the United States.'

According to Tripp: 'When I came forward it was not simply because of Monica Lewinsky. It was because of a culmination of years of so much corruption. So much the opposite of what was being presented to the American people, it was so completely different than what was going on behind closed doors.'

As a political independent with no agenda or ax to grind Tripp was, she admitted, appalled by what she perceived as the 'disingenuous front' presented by the Clintons to the world. It stood in stark contrast to the previous Bush administration under which she also served.

She said: 'The Bush administration may have bungled but the work of the people was all done in a straight forward, honorable way. The first George Bush was not a particularly talented politician but a decent statesman.

'Bill Clinton is a gifted politician and he was able to charm and seduce the country. The Clintons presented a disingenuous front.'

The year 1994 saw the first of a series of investigations into the propriety of real-estate purchases involving Bill and Hillary back in 1978 when he was attorney general of Arkansas and shortly before he became governor.

The investigations spanned seven years and became known as the Whitewater Scandal after the name of the business Bill and Hillary had started with friends James B and Susan McDougal with the intention of developing 230 acres of land in the Ozarks, Arkansas.

According to Tripp what she witnessed behind the scenes at the peak of the Whitewater scandal 'was not spin. It was lying to the American people knowingly and doing it routinely.'

She said that not for the first time and certainly not for the last: 'This was not recognizing any controlling legal authority investigating the various scandals and obstructing the investigations at every turn to ensure the malfeasance never surfaced publicly.'

As for Hillary's role, Tripp said: 'I watched her on countless occasions blatantly lie to the American people and knowingly lie.

'This was not a mistake or error or even spin. This was pure manipulation of the truth. In a press conference during the height of the Whitewater frenzy she was well rehearsed, her wardrobe was carefully selected to be soft and pastel and essentially every word out of her mouth, preserved for posterity, was a lie. It's all of a piece with Hillary.'

Because according to Tripp, Hillary operates on the assumption that, 'the rules do not apply' to her or her husband.

Her modus operandi was, and continues to be, Tripp explained: 'I will do what I want and then when I'm questioned I will say, "oops," or "bureaucratic snafu", and then after a couple of months her refrain will be, "this is old news, it's been investigated, I did nothing wrong, let's move on, it's time to address the issues facing the middle class of America."

'That's what she has always done and that's what she will continue to do and the frightening aspect of that approach is that it works.'

It is, Tripp believes, the way Hillary is approaching emailgate, the current scandal in which she is embroiled and which centers on the fact that, throughout her time as Secretary of State, Hillary used her own private email account as opposed to only her government address via a personal server which she has since wiped.

Among Hillary's initial justification for her actions was her assertion that she used the private account for convenience as she did not want to carry two devices. This was quickly scotched by the revelation that she uses multiple devices.

Tripp for one is not surprised by the scandal that she has described as a 'timely and telling' indicator of Hillary's 'no rules apply to me' way of operating.

She explained: 'The scandals simply continue. She covers them up and moves on. People should be aware that she is probably the first cabinet secretary in the history of our country who has operated with their own private server, for a reason. Every lowly government employee understands that electronic communication on government-operated computers belongs to the United States.

'Hillary knows this and it's why she chose to break the rules. Because every document written on a government device is a record and it is retrievable forever more. Hillary's voluminous documents are not retrievable. She is answerable to no-one.'

She continued: 'She was clearly not answerable to the president for whom she worked and more importantly by actions she took she was not answerable to the American public.

'She hands over what she chooses, deletes the rest and wipes the server clean. That is Hillary Clinton in a nutshell'.

It is a damning conclusion and it is a belief that has prompted Tripp to speak out. Today Tripp lives in rural Virginia, on an idyllic $3million farm that she and husband, Dieter, are currently selling.

The couple run a successful German Christmas store, The Christmas Sleigh, in Middleburg and, as a grandmother of seven, life for Tripp revolves around the family of which she is justifiably proud. It is not an existence she has any desire to disrupt but she is motivated now by the same sense of duty that saw her speak out 17 years ago.

Then, she faced dire consequences as she found herself publicly vilified for her actions and indicted on charges of illegal wiretapping. The charges were subsequently dropped.

Asked by Kenneth Starr if she had any final words on testifying, Lewinsky said simply, 'I hate Linda Tripp.'

Looking back Tripp said: 'I regret what I put my children through. I regret very much that they had to endure that level of vitriol but would I do it again? Yes.

'I come from a very patriotic background. My civil service career, well over 20 years at that time, meant a sense of loyalty, patriotic duty and honor. I sincerely cared about the integrity of the country's leadership.'

She still does. It's why she believes Hillary Clinton must never be president.

She said: 'I'd love to see a female president in my lifetime but I certainly would not choose to vote for a president of the United States based primarily on gender.

'Without a doubt it's time for a female president but it is without a doubt not the time nor will it ever be the time for Hillary Clinton to be that president. She simply lacks the integrity.'

Hillary Clinton is gayer than John McCain, who allegedly stayed alive as a POW by blowing all of the guards.

I guess it didn't matter whether we elected Clinton or Trump.

I think this is a genius Hillary plot.
You don't want to be busted for a terrible lie (like blatant corruption), you admit to a lesser lie.
"Oh! That's what it was, she's not hiding her emails coz shes stealing taxpayer money, she's a lesbian! Glad that's sorted, we love gays now, she's got my vote" first woman and gay president in one, succeeding after the first black potus. We're in a time of tolerance and change.

Second article I don't really get. It's about a woman who exposed the Monica lewinski scandal..... Yet she says Hillary orchestrated everything?
So if she kept her mouth shut, it never would've happened, Hillary never would've shot to stardom, but apparently it was all Hillary's doing? And this Linda Tripp would do it all again? Doesn't sound logical to me.

With 64 redacted passages just in what was recently released, it's obvious that she discussed confidential info on her private account then lied about it.

Anybody who votes for Hillary has been hopelessly duped.

I guess it didn't matter whether we elected Clinton or Trump.

RE: Did deleted Hillary Emails reveal her lesbian lovers?
I wonder what the switch is for most people. I'm talking about that point where you go from a regular, generally decent person to someone who will do anything to accomplish a goal of the nefarious type.

So your husband is a cheater and a womanizer. How do you ruin another person's life just to cover that up?

How do you make the decision to either allow people to die or actually have someone killed to get ahead?

How do you lie to a camera or another person's face when there's a high probability of someone's life being ruined or dead?

What makes her goals so important? Why isn't freedom for everyone good enough?

How does one flip that switch?

I don't think they are being duped. They know who she is. Nobody can actually believe she is a good person or candidate.

These people just hate goodness and wholesome lifestyles so much that they'd rather see their country collapse than have "those people" run the country.

Why do you think the Confederate South left the US? They were tired of the way things were getting. It's multitudes worse now.

Quote:Did Russian spy get close to infiltrating Hillary Clinton's inner circle? FBI warns of 'new breed' of Moscow agents

UPDATED: 15:42 EST, 1 November 2011

Anna Chapman wasn't just a member of one of the largest rings of Russian sleeper agents ever rolled up by the FBI.

The 29-year-old former real estate agent, who became a lingerie model and corporate spokeswoman back in Moscow, represented a new breed of Russian spies adapted to the post-Cold War world.

While the deep-cover agents didn't steal any secrets, an FBI counter-intelligence official told the AP that the spies were making progress to their ultimate goal. They 'were getting very close to penetrating U.S. policy-making circles' through a friend of a Cabinet official.

FBI representatives did not name names of any Cabinet officials involved, but Russian spy Cynthia Murphy of Montclair, N.J., provided financial planning for venture capitalist Alan Patricof, a political fundraiser with close ties to Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

At the time that the case broke, Secretary of State Clinton's spokesman issued a statement as an attempt to distance Mrs Clinton from the spy ring.

'There is no reason to believe that the Secretary of State was a special target of this spy ring,' her spokesman said.

The group of Russian spies, including Murphy, Chapman and fellow ring member Mikhail Semenko, were all technically skilled and able to work comfortably in a Western culture, doing so using their own names.

[Image: article-2056301-0EA0B34A00000578-874_634x1021.jpg]
Different breed of spy: Since being sent back to Russia after she was discovered for attempting to steal state secrets, Anna Chapman has turned into a TV personality.

[Image: article-2055788-0C7B597B000005DC-637_634x408.jpg]
Glitzy makeover: The Anna Chapman that became a media darling, seen here after her bust, bears little resemblance to the redhead seen in the FBI files

The spy ring was able to blend into American day-to-day life by working respectable jobs and assimilating easily into Western culture, just as Semenko did with his position at a D.C.-area travel agency.

They 'were very tech-savvy, very intellectual,' said C. Frank Figliuzzi, FBI assistant director for counter-intelligence, adding that Semenko is fluent in five languages, including Chinese.

Both of the new-breed operatives used state-of-the-art wireless computer communications, including burst transmitters that sent encrypted messages by radio in a fraction of a second.

Meanwhile, the older spies in the 11-member ring fell back on techniques that have been used for centuries: invisible ink, handoffs of money called 'brush passes,' and forged documents.

Like Soviet sleeper agents before them, they worked under false identities, called legends, some of them stolen from dead people.

All the veteran operatives had undergone years of intensive training in Russia to pass as ordinary Americans. But with the fall of the Iron Curtain and with open borders, someone in Moscow seems to have realized that training may no longer be necessary.

Eye on the prize: FBI agents left no stone unturned following and capturing Richard Murphy during some possible 'sight seeing'? at Columbus Circle in Manhattan

[Image: article-2055788-0E9D856A00000578-416_634x432.jpg]

Meeting place: Michael Zottoli (back) and Richard Murphy (front, with backpack), were watched by FBI agents while visiting Columbus Circle in Manhattan

With the two different approaches, one time-tested and one state of the art, 'the Russians were experimenting,' said Mr Figliuzzi.

Mr Figliuzzi's comments came Monday as the FBI released tapes, video and documents that offered a window into the bureau's surveillance, which stretched over a decade.

According to a written surveillance report, an FBI agent watched Chapman buy leggings and hats at Macy's. Later, cameras caught her roaming a department store while a Russian diplomat waited outside.

A surveillance video taken the day before her arrest shows Chapman sitting in a coffee shop with an FBI agent posing as her Russian handler.

Other ring members were shadowed during meetings by a Queens pay phone, in a Brooklyn park or during a stroll around New York's Columbus Circle.

[Image: article-2055788-0E9D53D800000578-186_634x381.jpg]

Double-life: Richard Murphy (left) shown with Christopher Metsos (right) was a mostly stay-at-home dad to two pre-teen children with his wife who worked for an accounting firm that had close ties to Bill and Hillary Clinton

The FBI says seemingly mundane pursuits often served as cover for the exchange of encrypted messages or the transfer of cash, all with the long-range goal of penetrating the highest levels of U.S. policy-making.

The FBI watched the ring operate so intensively for so long, Mr Figliuzzi said, that the bureau was able to penetrate the ring's communications network to the point where U.S. agents were able to pose as Russian intelligence officers.

'So in a sense we began to own their communications' and Chapman and Semenko came to believe that the undercover FBI agents were their Russian handlers.

The FBI released the material to The Associated Press in response to a Freedom of Information Act request. The investigation was code-named 'Ghost Stories,' and the release of documents on Halloween- a coincidence.

The linchpin in cracking the case, apparently, was Col. Alexander Poteyev, a highly placed U.S. mole in Russian foreign intelligence, who betrayed the spy ring even as he ran it.

He abruptly fled Moscow just days before the FBI rolled up the operation. Poteyev's role emerged when a Russian military court convicted him in absentia for high treason and desertion. The FBI did not comment on the Poteyev case.

Called 'illegals' because they took civilian jobs instead of operating with diplomatic immunity inside Russian embassies and military missions, the spies settled into quiet lives in middle-class neighbourhoods and set about trying to network their way into the worlds of finance, technology and government.

What appears to be a family photo of one spy, Donald Heathfield of Cambridge, Massachusetts, shows him graduating from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2000. The school revoked the degree a month after the FBI rolled up the spy ring.

The operation's codename, Ghost Stories, stems from a number of the spies using a technique known among counter-intelligence investigators as 'dead doubles' — taking the identities of people who have died. Tracey Lee Ann Foley, Michael Zottoli, Donald Heathfield and Patricia Mills all used the technique, Figliuzzi said.

The U.S. traded the 10 Ghost Stories spies arrested by federal agents for four Russians imprisoned for spying for the West at a remote corner of a Vienna airport on July 9, in a scene reminiscent of the carefully choreographed exchange of spies at Berlin's Glienicke Bridge during the Cold War.

While freed Soviet spies typically have kept a low profile after their return to Moscow, Chapman became a model, corporate spokeswoman and television personality. Heathfield, whose real name is Andrey Bezrukov, lists himself as an adviser to the president of a major Russian oil company on his LinkedIn account.

Vicky Pelaez and Juan Lazaro of Yonkers, New York;

Lazaro briefly taught a class on Latin American and Caribbean politics at Baruch College. Pelaez wrote pieces highly critical of U.S. policy in Latin America as a columnist for one of the United States' best-known Spanish-language newspapers, El Diario La Prensa.

Michael Zottoli and Patricia Mills of Arlington, Virginia;

He worked at a telecommunications firm. The couple raised a young son and toddler in their high-rise apartment.

Cynthia Murphy and her husband, Richard, of Montclair, New Jersey;

He mostly stayed home with their two pre-teen children while she worked for a lower Manhattan-based accounting firm that offered tax advice.

Heathfield and Tracey Lee Ann Foley of Cambridge, Massachusetts;

He worked in sales for an international management consulting firm and peddled strategic planning software to U.S. corporations. She was a real estate agent.

Mikhail Semenko of Arlington, Virginia;

Spoke Russian, English, Spanish, Chinese and Portuguese. He worked at the Travel All Russia agency, where co-workers described him as 'clumsy' and 'quirky.' But the FBI described him as linguistically and technically skilled

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev awarded the 10 freed spies Russia's highest honours at a Kremlin ceremony.

The case was brought to a swift conclusion before it could complicate President Barack Obama's campaign to 'reset' American relations with the Kremlin, strained by years of tensions over U.S. foreign policy and the 2008 Russian-Georgian war. All 10 of the captured spies were charged with failing to register as foreign agents.

An 11th suspect, Christopher Metsos, who claimed to be a Canadian citizen and was accused of delivering money and equipment to the sleeper agents, vanished after a court in Cyprus freed him on bail.

The FBI released surveillance photos of Metsos on Monday.

Mr Figliuzzi said Metsos travelled into the U.S. to provide the other illegals with money. Security measures after the September 11 terrorist attacks meant he could no longer risk carrying large amounts of cash, prompting the Russians to send officials already in the U.S. to meet with the illegals and pay them.

That could have made the spies more vulnerable to discovery, since governments generally keep a close eye on the movements of foreign diplomats.

Former Soviet intelligence officials now living in the West scratched their heads over what Russia hoped to gain from the sleeper ring.

'In my view this whole operation was a waste of human resources, money and just put Russia in a ridiculous situation,' said Oleg Kalugin, a former KGB major general who spied against the U.S. during the Soviet era, in an interview earlier this year. He now lives near Washington.

Alexander Vassiliev, a former KGB officer and journalist who has written extensively about Soviet spying in America, said the illegals were supposed to act as talent spotters and scouts, identifying Americans in positions of power who might be recruited to spill secrets for financial reasons or through blackmail.

Spies with the protection of diplomatic credentials would handle the more delicate task of recruiting and handling the agents.

Moscow's ultimate aim, Mr Vassiliev said, was probably to cultivate a source who could provide day-by-day intelligence on what the president's inner circle was thinking and planning in response to the latest international crisis. But he said there was no evidence the Kremlin made any progress toward that goal.

'How are you going to recruit someone like that, on what basis? That's quite a successful person. Why should he spy for the Russians? I can't see any reason,' said Mr Vassiliev, who now lives in London.
