His repeated use of Steroids: He's not Honest
His comments on Sakuraba: He's not Humble
His bullying of Eddie Bravo: He's not Nice
His views on Marijuana: He's not Intelligent
His competition Record: He's not that Skilled
His Academy's Reputation: He's not a great Teacher

Sorry to be a dick. But c'mon. I'm sure there's plenty more I'm missing.

great post.

he might be cool to meet at the bar but in terms of MMA his legacy has been fully tarnished. no one really speaks of him as a legend anymore. he dug his own grave

Youre getting irrational here.

I'm talking about immediate family. Royce was Rorions lackey. Rickson was his own legend and wanted no part of Rorion's business enterprise.

There is a reason people say that none of them really talk any more. I'm not saying Rorion is pure greed, but c'mon...

Hey Winnson I'm sorry to rain on the parade. But in 2015 I just don't see what quality Royce has that people revere so much.

He isn't a top level Blackbelt.
He doesn't run a successful gym.
He doesn't have a sweet dvd series.
His used extremely dirty tactics.
He ducked out of the UFC when people became wise to the guard.
He got super roided for all of his fights in Japan.
He got caught using Anabolic Steroids in America.
He got aced by Matt Hughes.
He tried to pick a fight with Eddie Bravo backstage of the Bravo x Royler Metamoris. I don't like Eddie either, but the guy was puking over the toilet at the time.

You guys just must like the old-school tough-guy attitude.

Just listen to him talk about marijuana:

Sorry to make all of these lists. I just think that when I look up to someone it's because they have a quality that I respect or would like to emulate, and I just don't see Royce's positive qualities.

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it... - Winnson - 07-03-2015 06:36 AM

You should be sorry.

Very, very sorry.

Your list sucks and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Now fuck off.

I'm not talking about liking him or agreeing with his personal life, etc. I'm merely stating that, without him, there would be no forum like this….no "mma". He was at the top of the game when the game started -not saying that he's at the top of where it's gotten to, now. But, what he and his brothers started became "the" thing. Royce was the "little guy" who went in there and choked or arm barred people. It was only after that when people started rethinking real fighting.

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it... - pug-thug - 07-10-2015 04:25 AM

I don't even think royce is a legend anymore.

The guy has truly ruined his legacy.

he wasn't even a real MMAer he advocated one style, gracie jiujitsu

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it... - pug-thug - 07-10-2015 04:29 AM

Royce is right about the pot though. you can't endorse those kind of psychedelics.

i smoke cigs and drink. I don't endorse that shit either.

royce may have done steroids, but i don't think he would endorse it.

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it... - kungfool - 07-10-2015 12:18 PM

I think that's how most all the BJJ teachers think. A huge percentage of them do or did smoke herb but they know they have to be role-models. Also, talking about weed openly makes your business seem unprofessional.

Eddie Bravo is the exception though. His association attracts hipsters and the 'alt' crowd for whom barbaric grappling wouldn't really fit their lifestyle of wearing plugs and working at the Apple Store. So they focus on snakey moves with hip names and weed references.

It's about Jiutjitsu, but it's also about IMAGE:

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it... - kungfool - 07-10-2015 12:21 PM

Anyway, Royce misunderstands the above as telling kids to do crack and drink malt-liquor or something, and got in Eddie's face with a third-world thug style 'You Disrespect My Family' bit.

I know people who have blazed with TOP level Gracies who are mega-stoners, so I doubt Royce is really as anti-weed as he wants you to believe.

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it... - Winnson - 07-10-2015 08:32 PM

Stop shitting on Royce please.

f*ggots

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it... - kungfool - 07-10-2015 08:54 PM

Winnson I really don't know why you idolize the guy.

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it... - Winnson - 07-10-2015 10:34 PM

He was fighting in 1993, before it was called MMA or NHB or anything.

You guys are comparing his achievements then to today's wrestlebox.

Stop shitting on the guy. He could kick your face in.

RE: Royce Gracie: Let's Face it... - Winnson - 07-11-2015 02:40 AM

I read this whole thread again and OP is right. If Royce wasn't the guy in there taking on all comers it would not have been the same.

6 foot 1, 176 pounds, just your average dude.

He wrecked everybody for years and most of them didn't even know what was coming.

He did it peacefully too. He never really hurt anybody in the process.

What a boss.

Jeff Glover is another known character in this line of "playful" hipster jiu jitsu. He pissed off Rener for pulling "donkey guard" against Baret at Metamoris. Its a Niche that the mainstream Gracies clearly look down on.
