If you had to pick one and only one, what would you choose?

Is this some sort of trap for shameless self promoters? Big Grin
The Overcoat...

or maybe...the Painted bird
Probably 'The Brother Karamazov' or 'Crime and Punishment' for Literature.

'I Am That' for non-fiction.

This is how we should have done it.

1 Fiction
1 Non-Fiction
Neal Stephenson's Quicksilver (aka Baroque Cycle, Quicksilver, The Confusion and The System of the World), although it is 3 volumes, and I can't claim to have loved all of it (he spends entire pages describing women's fashions for some reason, probably one of those things that once you have researched something in depth as an author you feel like an idiot for not using what you have researched)

Probably Quicksilver was the best one, and of course 'Half Cock' Jack Shaftoe was the most entertaining character, by a margin.

And best non-fiction, I will take Anatoly Fomenko's entire New Chronology series.

Are we allowed to choose entire series, instead of individual books?
I greatly enjoyed the Flashman series if we're including series'.

Never read those, Skookum, but after reading the summary, I have to ask. You f*ckin' with us? Big Grin

The Overcoat does seem a simple story with deep underlying meaning though.

You should should read The Overcoat - I'm not fucking with you Smile

I know The Painted Bird was plagiarized and is about a Jew boy in ww2 but it's a helluva read as well.

And Harry Flashman...what not to love?

Not plagiarized but fiction, attempting to pass itself off as autobiographical, wasn't that the allegation re: The Painted Bird?

Might have to check out Flashman and The Overcoat, thx!

No, plagiarism is my understanding of it. Jerzy Kosinski did not speak English fluently at the time the book was published. And of course his other novels such as Being There are completely different stylistically. Being there though is another terrific read, as it happens...
