Herbert Friedman, in his book Sun and Earth, describes Van Allen's global survey of cosmic-ray intensity: "The results from Explorer I, launched on January 31, 1958, were so puzzling that instrument malfunction was suspected. High levels of radiation intensity appeared interspersed with dead gaps ... Explorer III succeeded fully, and most important, it carried a tape recorder. Simulation tests with intense X rays in the laboratory showed that the dead gaps represented periods when the Geiger counter in space had been choked by radiation of intensities a thousand times greater than the instrument was designed to detect. As Van Allen's colleague Ernie Ray exclaimed in disbelief: 'All space must be radioactive!'." Herbert Friedman later explains that "Of all the energy brought to the magnetosphere by the solar wind, only about 0.1 percent manages to cross the magnetic barrier."

The atmosphere is apparently the equivalent of 6 ft of lead, too. So when you go up above 90km, you better bring 6 ft of lead with you, or be ready for some space radiation!

As for aliens... I think they are here. But for whatever reason they abandoned physical bodies, whether that was to travel massive distances or some technological advantage, or it wasn't intentional on their part ("cursed by God"). They are INTERDIMENSIONAL, not extraterrestrial.
the magnetosphere exists for a reason... and that is to protect earth from DEADLY SPACE RADIATION

during apollo 11, we were at a SOLAR MAX, meaning the SUN was emitting the most radiation in its 11 year cycle.

yet they went up without a hitch and it wasn't even a concern.

Alan Bean apparently wasn't even aware of the belts, saying " I don't think they had been discovered yet"
Geez, just some absolute wreckage from Ralph Rene:

Quote:R: In 1957 a great number of meteorites were gleaned from the Antarctic ice. Later the Moon Rocks would be found to be so similar that the NASA Imagineers concluded that they were knocked off the moon by meteorites that hit the moon. How do we know? Because NASA says it’s so!) Here on Earth with the science of guns over 500 years old we still cannot fire a shell with a velocity of over 4,200 feet per second. To escape the Moon requires a velocity of 7,785 feet per second. Guns have long tight barrels, oblong shells, rifling and intensely strong breeches to confine the hot gasses and direct all of their pressure to propulsion of the projectile. An explosive force such as a meteor strike creates hot gasses that radiate in all directions and diminish as to the square of the distance.

very interdasting if the numbers are true
They have rail guns that fire projectiles above 6500 fps.
Quote:Muzzle velocity is the speed of a projectile at the moment it leaves the muzzle of a gun.[1] Muzzle velocities range from approximately 120 m/s (390 ft/s) to 370 m/s (1,200 ft/s) in black powder muskets,[2] to more than 1,200 m/s (3,900 ft/s)[3] in modern rifles with high-performance cartridges such as the .220 Swift and .204 Ruger, all the way to 1,700 m/s (5,600 ft/s)[4] for tank guns firing kinetic energy penetrator ammunition.

Quote:A rocket moving out of a gravity well does not actually need to attain escape velocity to escape, but could achieve the same result (escape) at any speed with a suitable mode of propulsion and sufficient propellant to provide the accelerating force on the object to escape.

That is for rockets. Rene is talking about a meteorite hitting the Moon, then sending Moon rocks to Earth (as meteorites, themselves).

A rocket could continue accelerating at a slow speed for a long time to escape a 'gravity well' (Moon or planet). That is because a different velocity is needed at every altitude, so once you are out of the gravity well by a distance (high off the Moon/planet) a relatively low speed will take you a long way (i.e. into orbit). As gamers who play Kerbal Space Program well know! Generally astrophysicists would talk about the necessary 'delta v', not escape velocity.
yeah brain fart on my part.

i was thinking of escape velocity for the rocket that took off

sure it happened close to 50 years ago, but imagine if proof came out about fake or mangled landings?

US would lose ALL CREDIT on the world stage. it would be embarrassing as hell.

everywhere you go, you have to hear "you lied to us about the moon landing"
Maybe not. Bush got caught lying about WMDs in Iraq and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have died in the carnage and upheaval since... And then in the ensuing years Libya got destroyed as if it were Iraq redux, just with more skillful use of spreading democracy and regime change as a cover.
We've got 3 'i dunno's now but no one has yet said what it is they 'dunno' Big Grin

Most people aren't that interested in the technical details of space travel, so I have only discussed that a bit. The other reason is because they are likely keeping things secret, like the true lethality (or at least danger) of the VARBs (Van Allen Radiation Belts). And lastly, because they 'goalseeked' the specifications of the equipment. That is, they calculated what a (Saturn V) rocket would NEED to be capable of, in terms of velocity and fuel efficiency, and then said "Yep, that was exactly what it could do!"

So someone looking just at the math would then say "The problem is, it could do what was necessary, so why not go, in that case?"

I would contest the reason we don't use Saturn Vs today and the technology was scrapped (i.e. not built on, discontinued, nor further refined) was because it COULD NOT do what it said on the tin.

Any way, unless people WANT to discuss the technical details, this thread is going to move in the direction of the history of man on the Moon in cinema! Basically to show that the Apollo Program was the culmination of a decades (!) long effort to CONDITION the audience to WANT to see a man on the Moon! Really reminds me of The X-Files catchphrase "I Want to Believe". If you want to believe, well, let's just say even someone actively dissuading you, giving you info and showing how it could be faked, will all be ineffective!
just talk about everything. we have 10s of thousands of readers, I'm sure they would want to know

this is different because you are basically lying about the size of your cock with this

with other stuff there is a geopolitical angle that does register with people.

with the moon it's like.. you said you went to the cool party, but you were actually had some whacking off to pornhub

it would be a complete embarrassment if revealed
also the moon landing has taken on a mythical ritual status. landing on another planet.. planting the flag there, masonic ritual on the moon

it is registering at a subconscious level.. breaking the limits and exploring another planet

if this got revealed it would be devastating

perhaps if they stave it off another 30-40 years they can play it off as a cold war psyop.. but who knows
