'If official results prove the current figures, Hofer will become the first right-wing head of state on the European continent since World War II."

It's becoming rare to see Hitler described as right-wing these days. The conservatives all try to say he was left-wing, largely due to the fact he called himself a National Socialist.

The right like to say that he was left, and the left like to say that he was right.

I do think it is interesting to see how divided people are in Europe, Norbert wins 52% of the vote, but 48% went to the extreme left Green party.
This is just the beginning.

Yeah absolutely. And it's actually just a continuation, considering Hungary and Poland have already shifted right, with France, Sweden, and even Germany (among others) demonstrably moving right.

The Austria case is a particularly interesting one because of the effort that has gone into stopping this move towards the right. In 2008 the Israelis likely killed Jorg Haider, who is credited with moving the FPO to the right and credited with the reemergence of sorts of Austrian nationalism. I've been meaning to do a thread on that, but maybe I'll just compile some info on it here.

Please do.
Even though Hofer is still leading, they're calling this a dead heat. Which means he could still lose, with all those absentee votes. Someone may get an old-fashioned Chicago-style victory???!!!
It's been a very long time since Austria had a nationalist leader.

Too long if you ask me.

good points.

Hitler was left wing in the sense that he was anti-clerical and utopian
Actually, it was ever so close, but it's looking like he lost.

They just have to correct how people really voted a bit before making it official.

Ahh democracy. What a wonderful system.
Austrian presidential hopeful allegedly embellished Israel terror incident
Rightwing candidate Norbert Hofer accused of exaggerating story of female assailant to make himself look like hero

seems like another israel approved right wing candidate.

more of the same.
OK it's official. The leftie won and Hofer lost.

So close and too bad so sad, better luck next time.
Enjoy your mass influx of cultural enrichment Austria.
The Presidential role is ceremonial in Austria, what matters is the shift toward nationalism. 50% of votes for an anti immigration candidate is huge for a western country.
